Soon after we had declared war, the men had all left to join the service. There was a draft in place and many of the boys from my neighborhood had to enlist. "Since all of the men had gone to war, the women were the ones who had to go to work in the factories." Rosie the Riveter had become an iconic symbol to encourage women across the country. I never worked in the factories, but my mother did. While my mother was off at work, we were all in school, except for my sister Marjorie. She was too little to attend school, so my grandmother would come over to take care of her.
