"Yeah, I like you better if you just stick to being yourself. " I chuckled a little as I said this. Then I motioned Lily to the dance floor. I smiled and said,"I changed my mind. Let's dance."
I laughed internally as we danced rather clumsily on the dance floor. Two people with two left feet didn't particularly go well together. We danced anyway. We danced as though we didn't have a care in the world. In that precious few moments; it was as though I hadn't just moved here from Pasadena, California, and it was as though Lily's complete color blindness didn't matter much. Everything was peachy until we hugged.
I didn't expect to feel the way the hug made me feel. I certainly didn't expect to feel those 'feelings' for her so soon. It was such a pleasantly warm, fuzzy feeling that everyone talks about in books and shows and movies. The deafening noise in the building could have been background noise in that moment. I really could have cared less about my surroundings. In that moment, it was just me and Lily, until it was just me.
"I really got to go... my mom wants me home." Lily's pause mid-sentence clued me in that it had to be a lie.
"Oh, okay. See you tomorrow then?" I asked not really expecting an answer. Lily seemed increasingly ready to leave. She nervously ruffled her own red locks of hair with her hands.
"Yeah, yeah, tomorrow it is," Lily said with her face turning redder and redder. I grinned as I watched Lily leave with the same friend who had brought her to the dance and ultimately to me in the first place.
I stayed at the dance for a few hours longer before my folks came to take me home. My mom and dad actually aren't my real parents at all. I was actually adopted by them when I was seven and in all actuality, they are my grandparents. My dad, my real dad, had died in a car crash a few months before I was born, and my mom loved drugs too much to have raised me.
