After over 24 hours of forcing myself to stay wide awake and constantly watching my back out of paranoia of being followed by any unwanted company, it was awfully difficult to keep my eyes open as the buildings passed by the window, practically making me dizzy. The hunger wasn't as distracting, water could fill me if it became an issue. My body, however, wasn't my current concern.
With the sky now turning a sickly gray and heavy clouds spread across to make a glimpse of sunlight practically impossible, there wasn't a chance I could make it to the next stop. I could only guess how much longer I had before it started to pour, making my gut twist in on itself. Then sandwich I had saved for the next day wasn't going to make it if it got soggy.
The woman behind me suddenly went into a coughing fit and I shifted slightly in my seat. The ibuprofen I had tucked away was for emergencies only, not the flu I easily could avoid. Frustrated, I shoved my hand into my pocket and yanked out an overly creased, folded sheet of paper.
The map seemed to show me at least a few more buildings I could sneak into before night fell, so I hoisted my backpack over my shoulder and tugged down on the string above my seat, relieved to see that others were getting off with me as well. It's better to be with a crowd, no one could recognize me easily like that. What with my oversized hoodie and ripped jeans, I easily could pass for a drifter. Or, fuck, even one of the homeless. The less attention, the better.
"Okay, downtown Suwon," the driver announced, lurching the bus to a sudden stop. He looked up but I dipped my chin down, avoiding eye contact as I slipped in between the several people stepping off. No one noticed as I pretended to pay the travel fee, and the woman standing in front of me didn't notice her wallet peeking out from her coat either, giving me an open window to swiftly snag it and tuck it into my sleeve before hurrying to get off the bus and make my way in the opposite direction.
As soon as I was a meter or so away, I pulled it out and started to dig into my new finding.
"Credit cards... coupons... tissues..." I rummaged through until I caught sight of the paper that I was looking for, smiling wide.
"30412 won," I snickered, tossing the wallet away into the nearest garbage bin, "There's lunch and at least a new coat."
A flutter of wind swept past the alley I'd ducked in and I tightened the grip I had on the money, teeth baring as the cold bit at my ankles. Damn it, I had to find an overpass to sleep in tonight or I'd be stuck in one of the shelters again, and God forbid I'd have to avoid being caressed by another man with too much mustard on his beard again.
Blending back into another passing crowd, I shuffled back and forth between bustling streets, snatching cash and bracelets here and there that were practically begging to be taken. How greedy could I be, after all, if I was drifting from town to town with only what I could carry on my back? I needed at least some help from the public.
I slid back into a different crowd, one that was standing impatiently in front of a small, homely noodle shop that was either being ransacked or having a very good business day. It was kind of hard to tell. There seemed to be an attempt at making a line and someone near the front shouting directions to keep some type of order, but no one seemed to be listening. A heavy and flavorful scent that came from the entranceway suddenly hit me at once and made my mouth water, distracting me just enough to stop me in place.
Whatever the case was, I ignored my empty stomach and glanced around quickly before snaking my hand into the nearest pocket I could reach and take whatever my fingers closed around, leaving just as easily as I'd entered. It had been a guy this time, with silver hair, leather jacket and ripped jeans that would have scared anybody else standing by him. Survival didn't allow for much fear so even though his jawline could have cut me, I just took what I needed and left.
"Well that was easy enough," I mumbled as I leaned back against the alley wall behind me, keeping an eye out for strangers or a quick place to sleep, "I guess I should buy something before night--"
"She ran over here, fucking find her."
My words were caught in my throat as the scuffle of shoes rushing around the corner made my blood turn ice cold. The order hadn't been loud and if anything I was lucky to hear it before they got any closer, but the intent to do some serious harm was laced in between each letter and that's what made me start running. Staying to hide would be too risky.
A number of 'shits' slipped past my lips as I spun and started to jog in the opposite directing, dodging behind trash cans and dumpsters to avoid being seen. Even after what seemed to be a few blocks, I could still somehow hear the pair of voices that seemed to be behind me. My heart was pounding so loudly now that I was sure they could hear it.
"Suga, RapMonster is waiting for us to get back, we can't waste any more time," a deeper voice advised, clearly much less interested in finding me than this Suga person was. I silently thanked whoever RapMonster was and stayed still in my spot behind the giant cardboard piece I'd found, trying to figure out what I did wrong in my process of pickpocketing. Had I touched him accidentally? Was I not quick enough? Had it been too obvious...
"Hey, I think I found her."
The cardboard was whipped away and I stared up at the man who had his cap on backward and twin dragon tattoos up his left arm, muscles large enough to break me in two. He smirked and I staggered to stand up, fists clenching. I probably couldn't fight them both, but I would throw a left hook if I had to.
"Yeah, that's her," Suga muttered behind him, arms crossing. I sent him a scowl and the other man's smirk grew.
His eyes fell down to his knuckles in disinterest before sighing and glancing back, clearly gauging the aggravation I'd caused. Suga bared his teeth, taking a step forward only to be blocked by an arm that kept him from getting any closer to me. I held back a flinch and let my hand rest against the wall behind me, trapped.
This made Suga growl. "Stop fucking around, V."
"Let's take her back and see what RapMon says," V mumbled, shrugging with a hint of a smile, "If she managed to steal from you, then she's at the very least, expendable."
My jaw tensed as the suggestion was made. Who they hell did they think they were, talking about what they were going to do with me as if I wasn't there? If I wanted my choices being made for me, I wouldn't have run away.
"You take her then, I'm not touching a street rat," Suga spat after a few seconds of silence. V snickered and my eyes widened. The urge to cock my fist back and let it go right into his face washed over me and I took a step forward, teeth baring.
"Who the hell are you calling-- ngh!"
I'd been suddenly cut off by my own pained grunt as V held my arm behind my back and wrapped his hand around my neck, giving me no space to move whatsoever. I'd been so focused on walking straight towards Suga that I failed to even remember V's stance beside me. I twisted and turned in place to try and wriggle out of his grasp but it only made him hold tighter. I swallowed and let my arms go limp.
"Look at you, all brave and shit," V chuckled into my ear, his breath warming my neck as the air grew colder.
I tilted my head away from him and scowled, growling out my response to his amusement.
"Go fuck yourself."
Suga and V shared a quick smirk before my knees suddenly buckled beneath me from an abrupt heavy, shove, making me fall face first into the pavement below. I heard my skull crack at the contact and could only catch V's last reply before my eyes closed without warning.
"Now we're definitely taking you back to BigHit."
