Suraj took extra effort in getting ready for his meeting at Today Magazine. After all, he was the one who called up the editor to invest in the company, as soon as he learned who the assistant creative editor was. He selected a blue three-piece suit and adjusted his black tie as he smiled at the thought of seeing her again.
"But will she see me again?" he wondered as he opened his dresser and picked out his Armani black shoes and put them on. Then he thought of a plan that would make Neha come to him, even better. He took out his phone and dialed a number.
"Tell the assistant creative director of Today Magazine that the meeting venue has to be changed. I will be discussing the investment at my own office during lunch. And do add the fact that the lunch is crucial for their company's investment." He hung up and smiled to himself. She will come to strangle him, he knew it.
Soon enough the sound of heels clinked around the hall that slowly approached towards Suraj's office. He finished going through the accounts and looked up as his office door almost burst open and Neha stomped into his office, her eyes burning with hatred.
"Why on earth this sudden change of venue? What the hell do you want from me you asshole?"
Suraj expected this outburst. He stared at Neha and noticed her curvy figure that was clearly showing even though she wore a simple fitted white shirt and blue jeans. Her jet black hair was tied up in braids and her signature nerdy glasses sat on her nose as usual.
"She really hasn't changed," he thought as he reeled his mind back to business.
"Although I would love to see you throwing curses at me all day long, we have work to do Neha," Suraj gestured her towards the sofa on the other side of the office.
"It's Miss Sahni for you," Neha replied and took her seat. Suraj rose from his desk and came to sit beside her on the sofa. He smiled.
"So shall we begin?"
For the next hour or so they both discussed the magazine in detail. Neha told him about the growth and development of the magazine and what kinds of articles were generally published. The magazine was owned by Monak's father, who was a great journalist himself. His stories highlighted not only the life and culture of India but also the daily life and problems faced by a common man. His son Monak took over a few years before and has continued the tradition of the prestigious magazine ever since, with Neha by his side. Suraj was impressed.
"So what do you think?" Neha asked him after telling him all there is to know about the magazine.
Suraj was about to reply when he looked at Neha and saw her staring at him with her dark eyes. Her eyeliner was just a little smudged around the corner of her left eye, but she never seemed to notice. Looking at her intense gaze he was again transported back to that day, the day when all the problems started.
Flashback:
"Hey you ok?" Neha brought Suraj out from his sea of thoughts. They were walking hand in hand along a lane. It was the final week before the final results were out, and Suraj was tensed. Neha squeezed his hand reassuringly.
"Yeah I'm fine. It's just..." Suraj looked into Neha's eyes and again forgot what he wanted to say, what he had been meaning to say for a long time. Neha's kohl was again smudged just around the corner of her left eye, but Suraj knew she never noticed her own beauty. She cared about everyone else way too much.
"Look babe I know you are tensed, but don't worry it's going to be alright. You are going to do great."
"I know Neha. But I'm still worried. Not only about me, but about us also."
"You really think I'm going away to study somewhere far from here?"
"I know you don't want to go, but I think your mom will send you there. I honestly don't know what this will do to our relationship."
"You, you want to breakup with me?"
"No... I mean... I don't know."
Neha stopped on her tracks. She released her hand from Suraj's grip and almost whispered "I think I should go home." And with that she turned around and left him.
Seeing Neha's retreating form Suraj felt numb. He even noticed the slight tear that managed to escape from her left eye just before she turned around. That's when he knew.
"I'm going to hurt the only girl I love," he said to himself and walked back home.
End of Flashback.
"I never wanted to hurt you Neha. I'm really sorry for what happened." All of a sudden Suraj blurted out. Only then he realized what he had just said.
Neha remained quiet for a minute, simply staring at him. Then she got up and whispered "I think I should head home. Have a good day Mr. Mehta." And with that she walked out, without glancing back.
But Suraj still noticed the single tear that flowed down her left cheek, before she quickly wiped it away and left.
