Miles couldn't believe how incredibly calm it was to sit in a dark room. The light was off and his blinds were shut. The plush bed comforted the gash in his leg which he wouldn't dare move. His mom hadn't noticed the cut, he himself forgot about it and refused to look at it. The blood stained denim didn't faze him anymore it was the itch that crept up the skin that drove him wild. The fatigue began to settle in, all of the adrenaline and groggy confusion had been pumped from his body and left him exhausted. He finally picked up his phone, wincing at the bright light. He knew he needed to call Tyrell but he was a little scared what he might hear.
He dialed his friend's number and listened to the agitating ring of the cell phone. Miles' mind began to race as he reached the third ring, every possible scenario passed through his mind. What if Tyrell was still in the forest-- alone and wounded by that psychotic man? What if Miles had just left him there to die? The phone went straight to voicemail. He took deep breath to refrain from yelling into the receiver.
" Hey Ty, it's Miles. I just need to know if you're good, call me back."
He hung up the phone and noted that it was five p.m. Bexley should be home by now, so he dialed her number.
" Hello?" A quiet voice answered the phone, Miles strained his ears to listen to her over his heavy heartbeat.
" Um hi, is---" Miles was cut off,
" Look, now really isn't a good time. Can you call back?"
" I can't, I need to speak to Bexley." Miles raised his voice a tad, the woman on the other end sighed.
" And who's this?" Her twangy voice made Miles' ears buzz.
" Miles. I need to know if she got home okay," Now he was standing, pacing around the dark floor.
" Well I'm sorry Miles, you're going to have to call back." She hung up her end of the phone.
" Bitch!" Miles exclaimed, throwing his cellphone on to his bed. It bounced on his comforter and landed flat on the carpet. He wasn't tired anymore, now his mind seethed with angry thoughts. Miles needed to know if his friends were safe, but no, Bexley's mother had to be a prude. For all he knew, Bexley could still be trapped in the school with the lunatic prisoners; She had showed up today as well.
Miles growled under his breath and hit at the air with a clenched fist. He couldn't punch another hole in his wall or his mom would kick him out again. From the kitchen came the small sounds of a whispered argument, two harsh voices tried to stay hidden. Miles crept to his door and put his ear against it. His brother's low voice was the only thing he could hear. He took another breath and glanced at his phone before opening the door. Scurried footsteps ran from the kitchen to the living room as Miles moved down the hallway. Aidyn sat at the kitchen table, he didn't bother look up from his book as Miles entered the room.
" How are you feeling Miles?" His mother sat on the sofa in front of the t.v.
" Uh-- okay I guess."
The dizzy spells only seemed to last a few moments when he stood up, that was a good sign.
" I have to work soon, but we can sit together for a bit if you'd like?"
Aidyn laughed a little, covering it with a cough. Their mother's glossy eyes looked over a sad smile.
" Yeah, sure."
Miles moved over to the couch and sat down, awkwardly. This was the first time he had sat next to his mother for weeks, she'd been working like crazy for the past ten years and sitting together was a rare occasion.
