Three sharp beeps filled the courtyard; loud and accusing, playing over and over like a scratched track on a CD.

" What the hell?" Tyrell Wabaan threw his empty Coke can into the garbage bin.

Miles walked to one of the classroom windows cautiously, to avoid being seen by any teachers. He realised as he watched the commotion inside that no teacher would care. They rushed around the hallway under a flashing, red light and within the minute every door in sight slammed shut. A trash can had been tipped on its side, the casual discarded paper that floated by made the scene more ominous. Miles bathed in the red light for another moment before turning around.

" I think it's a lockdown," He observed.

He peeked through an adjoining window, a few students who had shown up that day dashed into the nearest room. The usual sick, shuffling step had been forgotten in the wake of the lockdown bell. Miles shook his groggy head, stepping away from the tinted windows.

" I think we should split, they never have those lights on." Tyrell stated, scanning the empty courtyard.

" Then my mom's gonna know I skipped," Miles protested.

A slight breeze roamed through the space, kicking up the leaves on the cement. The courtyard sat under the lonely overpass,  around them were two withered flower beds and barred up classroom windows.

" Dude, she's not going to care. Half the school's still sick anyway,"

The two sped across the courtyard, Tyrell had to duck under the semi-low ceiling. The lockdown bell haunted the silent school ground.  Tyrell was almost in a jog as they emerged into the daylight when suddenly, he shoved Miles to the side.

They pressed against the wall to hide from shattering glass, Miles shielded his face and covered his nose as the fuming chemistry set came hurling through the window.  Tyrell hacked and gasped for breath, the glass crunched under his feet while he limped away. The thick, smoke wrapped around Miles' throat and he skinned his palms against the brick wall , following the silhouette of his friend.

" Here boys --- C'mere boys!"

Through the clearing smoke Miles could see the outline of a man. He wore nothing but a set of ragged boxer shorts and a few stray tuffs of hair on his head.

" See what they did to me, come seeeee,"

Half growling, half singing he skipped from foot to foot. Tyrell turned around, Miles saw his hand protruding from the smoke and grab his shirt collar. Tyrell yanked him across the courtyard,

" Go, go!"

He gave Miles one final shove just as the man jumped through the hole in the glass.  He landed on all fours, shaking his head and sniffing the air. The groggy feeling left Miles' head as the adrenaline set in and he began to run behind Tyrell. Tyrell's arms swung and cut through the air, he whipped across the school yard. The uneven grass slowed Miles, he struggled to keep up the pace. Behind him he could hear the snarling breaths of the half naked man.

Tyrell looked over his shoulder, making brief eye contact with Miles,

" Take the path!" He shouted.

Tyrell headed straight for the bushy treeline,Miles turned to the direction of the dirt path that twisted and turned around the forest. Just as Miles regained his footing, Tyrell crashed through the underbrush. His figure was lost in the thick, green trees. Miles looked behind him to see the man hopping on all fours, alternating sides to avoid the glass. He whipped through the path, his fingers curling around the chain link fence to keep his balance. His chest heaved as he panted, the wind blew into his clogged ears. He couldn't tell if the wind were howling, or if it was the man.
