Masamune never liked his birthday.

Every year he would be presented with gifts, but he would decline them all (with exceptions such as Kojūrō's gift of course). To him, every gift had strings attached. If there was always a hidden motive, then it would be better to not accept them at all.

Or so he thought.

"Masamune-sama," Kojūrō called out, standing in front of his lord's room, "You have a package from Osaka."

"If it's from the Toyotomi, then forget it. Just throw it away or donate it to those who need it." Masamune replied before groaning and turning to his side, comfortably burying himself in his futon.

"It's actually from (F/N)."

The head retainer heard the shuffling of cloth from behind the door before it opened to reveal a bedhead Masamune. "Give me that." He ordered, taking the wrapped box in Kojūrō's hands before closing the door.

Masamune sat down on his messy futon and unwrapped the box. There was a letter attached.

'Bontenmaru!!!! Sorry I haven't written anything to you since I got here. I only remembered about you now-- Just kidding! I wanted to write a letter myself instead of having someone else do it, so I did a bit of studying first. Anyway, happy birthday! Becoming taller than me... I won't forgive you. Just you wait, Bontenmaru, I'll grow taller as well! For your information, I'm doing just fine here so don't worry too much about me, okay?

In this box is something special, so don't lose it! It's a good luck charm to help you with whatever you're having problems with now.

The letter was full of crude drawings of blobs winking as well as hearts. Masamune smiled to himself, setting the letter on the floor and removing the lid from the box.

It was a mini horse figure made of sticks. He looked at it with a soft look in his eyes. "Imbecile. You never change, do you?" Masamune couldn't resist grinning, remembering his childhood friend who loved to eat dango.

Maybe birthdays are enjoyable after all.
