He was the sun that shone his love onto the flowers of his loved ones. He was the sturdy trunk that the branches depended on. He was the flame that gave warmth to his people.
He was your lord, Azai Nagamasa.
You have never served a lord like him before. One could call him the ideal ruler, seeing the way he cared for the people and his determination in achieving peace.
It was a rainy evening when you met him. Your clothes were soaked and you were covered in bruises. Family matters left you without shelter, but you'd rather die shivering than be with those people.
You collapsed in front of an approaching army. 'How embarrassing.' You thought. Your vision was getting blurry and the wet ground felt absolutely uncomfortable. The soldiers were probably just going to kick you around. You knew how to fight, but your energy was drained. One man galloped his horse towards you, stopping just before he reached your body and dismounting his horse. He quickly carried you into his arms, his blond hair different from the rest of the soldiers. The man was yelling something you couldn't understand. Fatigue got to you and you blacked out.
You woke up in a lavish room, a damp cloth on your forehead. After a few minutes, the blond man came into the room.
"I see you're awake." He gave you a gentle smile, "Are you feeling better?"
"A bit.." You replied. In truth, your whole body hurt, but it was better than being out in the rain all alone.
He sat down beside you, "My apologies, I haven't introduced myself. I am Azai Nagamasa."
If you were feeling well, you would have choked on your own saliva and hacked violently in shocked. Your surprise had to be kept within you, though. You didn't have the energy to even sit up.
"I-I'm so sorry... milord.." You let out a small cough.
"Please, don't force yourself. You're still sick, so you should rest."
Nagamasa himself took the towel on your forehead, dipped it in water, and placed it on its spot again. You quietly shivered at the coolness of the damp cloth on your skin.
After that, you gradually became stronger. Ever grateful to Nagamasa, you decided to serve him as a fighter. He was against it at first but you persuaded him to accept you as a soldier in his army.
His benevolence attracted you to him. The Azai was like your true family; the one you needed and wanted. You truly loved being by his side, along with your new friends Takatora and Yoshitsugu.
Family wasn't the only thing you saw Nagamasa as. Over time, your feelings for him grew as well. He was kind to everyone, and seeing him genuinely care for the people made your heart skip a beat. Even when he was just walking past you in the halls, your heart beat faster. You find yourself wanting to prove yourself to him. You want him to praise you and give his attention to you. The feeling is different from all those past loves that you had.
It was then that you realized that you fell in love with him. Romance with your lord? A far-off chance, but a chance is a chance. Nagamasa was especially gentle with you, and you hoped that this was a sign that he returned the feelings you had.
Everyday, your love grew and grew. It felt like you would explode if you didn't express yourself to him.
You couldn't take it anymore. You walked through the quiet corridors toward your lord's room. Your mind told you to go back, but it was now or never. You were about to announce yourself, but..
"You are getting married to Nobunaga's sister."
His father's voice could be heard from inside the room. Your chest tightened and you instinctively put a hand to it.
"....Understood, father."
You've never been more hurt at Nagamasa's words. You couldn't bare to hear more; you took off running in the direction of your room. You shut yourself inside and curled up in a corner, the pain in your chest too much to bear.
You bottled up your emotions. The pain was still there, but you learned how to live with it. Nagamasa got married to the lovely Oichi from the Oda clan.
Compared to her, you looked simple and plain.
You didn't have her beauty and you didn't have her grace. You could punch someone in the face, but it was an unlikely possibility that a man wod want that in a woman.
They looked so happy and you looked at them, green with envy. They were perfect for each other; the very picture of a sun to help the beautiful flower grow.
One glance at Nagamasa and you could tell that his gaze at his wife was loving as ever. He was happier and gentler to her than he was to you.
There was no competition to begin with. Though it's an arranged marriage, they fit with each other so perfectly.
You frowned and turned away. The sight was too much to bear. It felt like the beautiful flower's thorns were piercing your skin unintentionally.
You left the happy couple alone, your heart painfully pounding in your chest.
Who cares if he's with someone else? What matters is that he's happy.
You tried to convince yourself, but the pain wasn't going away.
It appears that if you get attached to the sun's warmth, you'll just get hurt and burned in the end.
