[00. prologue]

Steff and I had been shuffling down the streets of Sydney for hours now, the harsh wind chilling our bones and numbing our fingers, yet we had not given up hope. I was in the lead, with Steff close behind me constantly checking Twitter for updates on the location of her beloved band.

Dark grey clouds were rolling in above our heads, the threat of rain growing with every passing minute. I hugged my navy coat closer to me after adjusting my scarf. Why hadn't I listened to dad and worn my gloves?

"Paz?" Steff asked, her voice hushed. I turned to face her and noticed that she'd stopped walking.  Steff glanced up at the sky, shivered and then finished her question. "Do you think we're actually going to find them?"

Ever since they had returned to Australia, Steff has been itching for the opportunity to stalk her favourite band, 5 Seconds of Summer. Sure, they're from Sydney, but now that a lot more people know who they are, finding them is going to be a lot harder.

Steff introduced me to 5 Seconds of Summer in late 2011, when she first discovered them. To be completely honest, I thought it was just going to be a phase but I was wrong.  Two and a bit years later and she's still heavily dedicated to them.

I bet you want to know what I'm doing here, stalking with her, right? I like 5SOS and their music, don't get me wrong, but I'm not their number one fan on the planet. Yes I'm a fan, just not the kind that loves them to death or would listen to their songs every day on repeat.

Steff's worried brown eyes were glued to mine, waiting for a response. Although I had a sinking feeling that we wouldn't find her boys, be it because of weather or otherwise, I wasn't going to tell her that.

My lips turned up at the corners, forming a smile. "Of course we're going to find them Steff! I know it!" I winked at her, causing an enthusiastic smile to appear on her face. She ran the few steps it was to catch up with me and once she had, we linked arms.

Every now and then, Steff's phone would buzz with the occasional update from a 5SOS update account of twitter. With every notification came a sigh of disappointment. Update accounts were refusing to give her details and hotel names and other people who had managed to track down the four boys were keeping their mouths zipped shut.

I began brainstorming ideas on how to cheer up Steff, and how I could possibly convince the stubborn people of the Twitter community to help us out. Maybe I could bribe them somehow, but with what? I settled on the idea that both of us needed a Starbucks fix, so I ran the idea past Steff.

"Hey Steff, how about we take a break and grab some hot chocolate?" I suggested, hoping to see my best friend smile. When she glanced at me, I could tell that a smile was about to form on her lips, which were numb and turning pinky-purple from the cold.

"Starbucks hot chocolate?" questions Steff.

"Oh but of course," I winked, and we raced around the corner to the closest store, with me losing by a long shot. Steff is very talented compared to me. She's athletic, intelligent, artistically-skilled and all the rest. She's like an Olympic athlete next to me. But that didn't bother me, because I was musically-gifted, something that Steff could become very jealous of at times.

Our local Starbucks looked very much the same as usual, with it's cute little tables and café chairs and regular staff. The only difference being the new trainee who served us; Carson.

It is a well known fact at school that Carson Matthews has a crush on me. I was very much oblivious to it at first, and also completely in denial. Carson Matthews is one arrogant son of a bitch who flirts with anything that has a vagina and boobs. So I thought him flirting with me was completely normal, and so I just slapped him. Well, as it turns out my sarcastic attitude and violence actually appeals to the asshole. Queue the disgusted shivers.
