The beautiful stranger named Dani and I were on our way to Starbucks. "So..." she started, "What do you do for a living?" She looked up at me curiously and I froze. I thought for a moment. If she's asking what my occupation is, that means she doesn't know I'm in a band. To her, I'm just an ordinary guy. I actually have a chance to act normal with someone for once. I look down at her and reply to her question without thinking.
"Have you heard of a band called Muse?" I cursed myself out in my head. I literally just exposed myself to her.
"I have heard of them. I've only listened to a few of their songs though, their most popular songs. I never really had time to listen to them since I was so busy. Maybe I will soon, though, since I finally have free time. Why are you asking?" she laughed, wondering how my answer had anything to do with her previous question.
I took a subtle sigh of relief, realizing she still doesn't know who I am. But she does know about the band, which of I'm not careful, I can expose my true self.
"Uhm, I... I'm in a band called.. THE ROCKET BABY DOLLS. Yea, we're called the Rocket Baby Dolls. I'm the bassist and backing vocalist of the band" I said not very convincingly. But, surprisingly, she believed me.
"Wow, that's really cool! I'm in a band, too. We're called Blue Avenue. I'm the lead singer and guitarist. And the name for your band is pretty original. Hey, don't take this the wrong way but, don't you think that Rocket Baby Dolls is a really long name for a band? Maybe you should shorten it?"
"You have no idea"
I laughed, remembering the conversation me and the boys had about changing our name to something shorter back in the day.
"Hey Chwis, can we talk about something weally quick. It's about the band" Matt said seriously to me. At the time, we were 19 years old. At the time, our name was Rocket Baby Dolls, not Muse. We were happy with it, I was happy with it, considering I came up with the name. It fitted us in a weird way. It sounds badass but very strange and timid. Kind of like our music. At the time, we were playing covers songs but, we recently started making original music. We were taking off. We were getting booked for many gigs, people started to listen to us and recognize us, we were becoming famous. But fame meant we had to take things more seriously.
"Look Chwis-" we were interrupted by Dom entering the room, he came and sat by Matt's side. He seemed to already know what this conversation was about. At the moment, all I felt was fear. I thought they were going to kick me out of the band because I wasn't good enough or something. I started to feel anxious and mentally prepare myself for when I heard the words "We don't want you anymore"
"Okay, we're all settled. Look Chwis, Dom and I-" I interrupted Matt by saying "It's fine, I know what you're going to say. I'll pack up my stuff and go. I know I'm not good. I'll start looking for a better job soon. Thanks for an amazing few years with the band"
Matt and Dom looked at me, then at each other with confusion. They realized what I had said, and laughed. Now it was my turn to be confused.
"We aren't kicking you out of the band, you wanker. We were just gonna say since the band is starting to get more recognition and we need to be more serious, we thought it would be a good idea to change the name of the band to something more simpler and shorter." Dom said.
