I must say, i'm extremely happy with the way this one turned out. The title is taken from Coldplay's debut album of the same name, as it's one i grew up listening to and is a favourite of mine.
The songs used in this chapter itself are from said album, titled Sparks and Yellow.

WARNINGS: N/A? A little steamy kissing but that's it. Oh but it's very sweet and may cause cavities. Brush your teeth, children.

'This is why I fell in love with you.'

What was supposed to be a quiet night in with your best friend, with the plan of watching movies and baking had turned into the complete opposite, and by midnight you were doing a completely different type of baking.

You were sat on the balcony, a joint being passed between the two of you with a Vodka & Coke gripped in your free hand. You were both pretty wasted as well as stoned, and in all honesty, although you’d feel shitty in the morning you didn’t regret it. You needed to spend some real time with Ashley, considering you’d both been so busy recently. It took you back to your high school days, where you’d sit on a rooftop in the middle of the city and smoke together while watching the night sky. It was a little cliche, but Ashley was your best friend and those memories mean everything to you.

Everything was complicated between you and Ashley. Well, from your part anyway. You’d come to terms with that. It was just a typical in love with your best friend story that the average person was either tired of or a complete sucker for. You were tired of feeling this way. You’d even refused to date for years because you felt dirty and unfaithful. One night stands were the furthest you really ever went. It was getting ridiculous, but you refused to admit that.

“We’re out,” she stated next you, knocking her knee against your own and holding up the remnants of a joint.

“Shit,” you curse quietly, disappearing into the apartment for a short minute and reappearing with one you had made earlier in the night and hadn’t quite started with yet. “Never fear.”

“Preparation,” she smirks, taking a deep drag after lighting it and handing it back to you. “That’s what I like to see.”

Silence consumes the both of you as you continue to watch the night grow older, stars continuing to appear throughout the darkness. It’s comfortable- mostly, but there’s always that tiny voice in the back of your mind eating away at you, forcing you to spill your feelings. Maybe tonight would be the night you do so. It’s an intimate evening, you’re alone with her in your own apartment and you’ve devoured a lot of liquid and herbal confidence in the past few hours. Maybe, just maybe, it’ll go your way.

“Do you think we’re alone in the universe?” Ashley asks, her warm, chestnut eyes continuing to watch the specks of light appear and disappear throughout the darkness. “Like do you believe in...I don’t know, parallel universes? The paranormal? Aliens?

You take a breath before replying, “that’s kind of a big question, Ash. Why’d you ask?”

“I dunno,” she shrugs. Her eyes crinkle and her mouth twitches as she moves her shoulders and you’re sure it’s one of the cutest things you’ve ever seen her do. It’s simple, but you can’t seem to resist it. “I guess it’s just one of the most wondered things.”

“I get that,” you nod softly. “And honestly, I think it’s impossible for us to be alone.”

You look over at her and you see her gazing intently at you. You take that as a gesture to continue, so you turn your head to face the night again.
