Law's POV!
It seems like a normal day again, however the grand line didn't like normal so today something was up just like every other day in the grand line. We need to surface because we are running out of air in our air tanks, so I give them the order to do so. Once we surface a news coo seagull finds us amongst the waves and drops a newspaper on the unassuming Penguin, who shouts in confusion and yells at the retreating bird in anger.
"Captain! There's a ship off the starboard side!", Bepo shouts, catching my attention.
"How big is it?", I ask, already planning a route of escape of it was a navy ship.
"It's just a small dinghy hold on! It looks like there's a person on the ship!", Bepo shouts.
"What? Bring them in immediately!", I order, the person might've been dehydrated or worse.
"Captain! I heard there was a naval attack on an island nearby, maybe this ship is from that island?", Satchi asks, holding up a newspaper with the head line 'it sinks! Island terror erupts as navy attempt to deal with ungrateful islanders!'.
"Captain! The person is a lady! She's holding something though!", Bepo says, helping the boys pull in the small little dinghy with a rope they had grabbed.
"Just pull her in, I'll check on her if-", I start, only to be cut off by Penguin.
"Captain! She's holding a kid in her arms!", he shouts, stunning me into silence before I rush up to see what he could. Indeed the pale looking lady, who was most likely dehydrated and starved, was holding a small girl in her arms. She looked only to be five years old and clung to whom we assume is her mother, crying softly and staring at us scared.
"D-don't t-touch m-my m-mommy!!", she shouts, her voice scratchy and nearly gone as she clings closer to her mom.
"We won't hurt her little girl, she looks like she needs help.", Penguin coos, trying to calm her down.
"D-Don't t-touch her!! S-She's a-lready b-been h-hurt e-enough...", she whispers, just loud enough for us to hear.
"Captain, that lady reeks of blood. I don't think she's alive anymore.", Bepo says, sniffing the air for good measure.
"Are you sure? Then we'll have to tell her.", I ask, knowing Bepo wasn't lying.
"Yes I'm sure, I can't hear a pulse either.", he adds, causing my heart to sink.
"Girly, our captain is a doctor, he can help her heal.", Satchi tries, knowing this might coax her away from the dead mother. She sniffles and wipes her tears for a moment, looking at something on the lady and at something around her neck then back to us.
"Then p-please, h-help my m-mommy.", she says, getting on her hands and knees and bowing in her plea.
"Good job Satchi-ya, Penguin-ya. Bring them in and we'll do an examination on the two of them!", I order, walking in to prepare two rooms for the runaways...Time skip of Bepo saying sorry!
It was confirmed, the little girls mother had died of starvation and a large cut to her abdomen where she bleed continuously before dying holding her child. I walk to the girls room, she was being taken cared of by Penguin-ya and Satchi-ya who weren't the best medics but still better than nothing.
"Alright, so far you need to drink lots of water and eat good food but for now we're going to have to keep you in bed, your body is fixing itself and needs lots of rest while it does so.", I hear Satchi explain, Penguin must have been taking a break.
"O-Ok, i-is th-this what i-I'm gonna b-be wearing f-for now?", she asks, her voice still scratchy but louder than before even with the stutter.
"Yes sorry, we haven't much girl clothes and only one crew member is a girl but she's much older than you so these will have to do until we hit an island.", Satchi answers as I walk into the room. The little girl stares at me as I take off the medical mask I had been wearing and stick my sword into the floor near her bed, she tears up a bit before I notice that she's wearing one of my jackets as a shirt.
"Satchi-ya, is that really all that could fit her?", I ask, kind of annoyed by it but more worried about her condition.
"Yes captain, anything else I found was way too big and this was the only thing without a pants portion that she would trip over when heading out to an island or bathroom.", he answers, fixing the sunglasses on his eyes better.
"I guess that's fine, I bet she already knows what I'm about to say don't you?", I ask, taking off my hat and ruffling my dark hair.
"Uh-huh, she's- she...she's g-gone isn't-t she?", she sniffles out, tears starting to fall already. I nod solemnly, then move out of the way as our cook, Trey, comes in with hot soup and water.
"I'm g-glad I-I st-still h-have th-the neckl-lace, b-bracelet, a-and e-earrings m-momma g-gave me...", she whispers, pulling out a sapphire necklace in the shape of a heart and a bracelet made of red jade. I spot the earrings on her ear as she fixes her gold speckled brown hair, they were gold studs with clear diamonds in them that glittered in all colors despite being so small they seemed to glow in the dim lighting.
"Captain, I believe she may have at least a week of rest before she can stand up and walk around freely without help.", Satchi explains, standing up from his crouching position as she starts on the soup.
"So how is it? Do ya like it little girl?", Trey asks, reminding us that he was here.
"Y-Yeah, it's d-delicious but m-my name i-is Taiga mister.", she says, taking a sip of the water before guzzling it down quickly and taking up the spoon again.
"The names Trey Taiga, nice to meet ya.", he says, smiling at Taiga.
"Nice to m-meet you t-to Trey-San!", she says, smiling for once.
"Well look at that! She's smiling! By golly it's adorable!", Trey exclaims, making Taiga blush and turn back to her meal.
"Well in any case she's going to need a bath soon, please hear back to your job Trey-ya and I'll look after her.", I order, knowing that someone has to be waiting for him in the kitchen.
"Alright captain, I bet Penguin will be there instead of helping Satchi.", he says somewhat sullenly and walks off to the kitchen.
"He's the worst at helping me with patients, but he's great at fighting. I'll see you later captain, also she has a stuttering problem, it's her throat but I can't check it like this.", Satchi says, following after Trey and leaving me and Taiga alone.
"I'm sorry for your loss but I need to do a quick check up on you.", I explain, pulling a chair up and sitting next to her bed.
"O-ok.", was her reply, soft spoken and stuttering was prominent in her speech.
"Now look, I'm going to ask a few questions so answer as best you can ok?", I ask, pulling out a clipboard and a pencil from my coat pocket. She nods and finishes up her soup quickly, turning her attention to me now with her hands in her lap.
"Good first off full name?", I start, looking at the paper on the board.
"M-Mom n-never t-told me my l-last n-name so she just c-calls me Taiga.", she answers, her voice clearer and less hoarse than before now that she's had something to drink. I write down her answer and continue asking questions about her, taking note of everything she says or explains...Time skip of Satchi and Penguin eating!
"Alright, just let anyone know if you need anything like food or water or bathroom, we'll help you until you recover then the next island we will drop you off.", I explain, standing up from my chair and placing it back to where it was.
"O-ok, I g-guess th-that m-makes s-sense.", she trails, looking at her hands sadly.
"However if I'm persuaded by my crew at dinner, which will be given to you here instead of you walking out there and possibly fainting, then you may stay. Also until you get better you must rest, Bepo-ya will most likely hang around here more often when you're in here, he's the polar bear walking around, I think you'll like his company instead of silence.", I add, smirking slightly at the thought.
"R-really?!", she exclaims, shooting up from her sullen mood.
"I'm sure they'd love to have another female on the crew however young they are, plus it gives them a reason to get stronger.", I finish, walking to the door and leaving on the doorframe.
"Y-you th-think?! I-I'd l-love to st-stay w-with y-you g-guys...", she trails, looking around the room and spotting the window.
"I'm sure about it but don't thank me when you get accepted, thank my crew.", I say, my usual humbleness shining through.
"I-I w-will!", she says before coughing slightly and recovering quickly, smiling at me brightly. Suddenly I get flashes of Lamie, my dead little sister, as I stare at her smile.
"A-are y-you o-ok?", she asks, pulling me out of my stupor.
"Yeah, I'm o-ok...just rest for now ok? I'll be back to check in on you once a day.", I explain, shaking my head slightly to clear my thoughts.
"O-ok M-Mr. C-Captain", she says, making me chuckle at the nickname.
"Just call me Law, Taiga-ya.", I say, leaving her door open and heading out to dinner.
"L-law, n-nice n-name...", I hear her whisper before I'm out of earshot.
