No one could ever know me
No one could ever see me
Seems you're the only one who knows
What it's like to be me---- I'll Be There for You, The Rembrants
September 2016
Matt and Amile headed back to the apartment that they shared with Grayson. On the way, they talked about how they were going to approach him. "We have to play the captain card," Matt stated flatly. "He's a team captain. He can't act like this."
Amile sighed, "I don't know, Matty. Maybe we need to point out how much they have in common. Cait probably understands his issues better than anyone else. Maybe that will convince him to stop this stupid bickering."
"I don't think that's gonna work," Matt insisted. "G doesn't think he needs any help handling that stuff. "
"He might not admit it, but I think he knows that he needs to get some of that crap off his chest." Amile countered.
They hadn't resolved anything by the time they opened the door to the apartment. There was no sign of Grayson, but they heard the sound of the video game coming from his room. As Matt stuck his head in, he saw Grayson blasting the crap out people while playing Call of Duty. Not a good sign, Matt decided.
"Hey, G," he smiled gently. "Got a minute?"
"I should be studying, but I needed to blow off some steam," Grayson got out through gritted teeth.
"Kinda what we wanted to talk to you about," Amile said pointedly. That made Grayson's head snap away from the game, but Amile was done proceeding with caution.
Grayson paused the game and got up from the bed. He followed his co-captains into the living room and plopped down with a sigh. He had a feeling he knew what was coming.
"G," Matt started softly, "you seem to have some, uhh, stuff with Cait. Anything you want to tell us?"
Grayson stifled a groan. "She just annoys me, okay? She's all sweet with you guys, but she's a total bitch to me. It's like she goes out of her way to be a pain in my ass. I'm not going to grovel and ask her to be nice."
"Have you tried being nice to her?" Amile questioned. "I mean, to have a friend, you have to be a friend, G. Goddamn, I sound like a mother again, don't I? This is pissing me off."
Matt shot his best friend a glare. "Kinda getting off topic, but Milly has a point. You two got off on the wrong foot, sure. But, you need to get past it, G. Whether you like it or not, she's here for the year. You two bickering isn't gonna change that, but it is going to start to affect the team. You're a captain, G. You gotta be the bigger person here."
"And," Amile picked up, "you might find she isn't so bad once you get past the badass routine. She's been through a lot, too, G. You two might have more in common than you think."
Grayson shot Amile a quizzical look. "The fuck are you talking about?" he questioned. "As far as I can tell, other than her injury, she's never had a tough day in her life."
"You should do some homework on her, G," Matt suggested. "You might be surprised."
