Blue eyes stare into the gray she-cat's, swimming with seriousness. Their fur ripples in twilight, glittering like stars. Silence stands between them, holding their mouths shut in an invisible grip. The cats blink at each other, unsure what to say.
"No...!" The gray she-cat's yowl is lost on the wind as the scenery in front of her twists into a tight circle.
The ginger tom that stood before her becomes silvery and ghostly, delicately balancing on top of the dirt, threatening to blow away at any moment.
"Who is it?" The gray she-cat cries, her green eyes flicking over her transparent companion. "Please!"
The tom's blue eyes glitter with desperation, but he simply nods sadly, as if to say 'sorry'.
The gray she-cat squeezes her eyes shut as a cool evening breeze carries a cloud of dust into her fur. As she opens them she knows it's too late, as she no longer feels the dirt beneath her paws, but instead the soft swan feathers carefully twined into her nest.
"Skyfeather, please hurry up!" calls a gentle voice. "I don't want us to make a bad impression on the warriors."
Rats. Of course Pandaspot chose the time when Skyfeather was receiving a prophecy to call her out to dawn patrol. Well, another day, another dawn. I have to get on with it. But I wonder what that tom was talking about?
