Most people who talked a lot were called a social butterfly. I, on the other hand, was referred to as an awkward social moth by most. I loved socializing, but I was not very good at it. I was very awkward. Some people thought I was annoying, hence where the moth part comes from because moths are annoying.
And today was the day my awkward social moth trait would destroy my chance at friends. I was going back to jail, I mean school, which means I'd try to make friends but say something weird and they'll never look at me again. It happened every time we moved. I've gotten used to only having my brother and his girlfriend, Eiley, who was also my only friend.
"I say we turn around and go to the beach instead," I threw the idea to Keaton. "It's not too late. We can pretend to be sick."
He shook his head, "For the last time, Keels, we aren't skipping school on our first day."
Ever since he woke me up this morning, I've been trying to come up with excuses. He hasn't budged. Our parents had already left for work when we woke up, so it wouldn't have been that hard to skip. They would've never known!
I rolled my eyes. He was such a goody-two-shoes sometimes. I thought the older sibling was supposed to do bad things like skip school and sneak out. Keaton doesn't do any of that!
"How's Eiley?" I asked him, changing the subject. I hadn't had the chance to talk to her yet. She probably hates me since I haven't called her or texted.
"You haven't talked to her?" He asked in disbelief. He was used to us talking every minute of the day.
"I've been busy," I grumbled.
In all reality, I haven't been that busy. I've just been too lazy to do anything. This settling in thing is hard work.
"You've literally only ate and slept all day since we got here," Keaton laughed.
"Yea, I've been busy!" I argued. I've got to eat and slept to live. Amirite or amirite?
Keaton finally answered my question, "She's fine I guess. She said she misses us though." A small smile adorned his face. They were so cute together, it made me disgusted.
"Awww! My little Eyeball misses me!" I squealed using her very rarely acknowledged nickname.
We pulled into a small school maybe 1/5 the size of our old school in New York. Our old school had around 4,000 kids all together, this one looked to have maybe 800 kids. This had to be the smallest school we'd ever gone to.
Once we got out of the car, Keaton grabbed my arm to make sure I didn't make a run for it. I rolled my eyes. He always takes the fun out of things.
The office was right in front of the front door. The lady immediately asked who we were, considering there were only a small amount of students who went here she probably didn't recognize us.
We gave our names and then got our schedules. She apologized because the student helper was sick and couldn't make it to school so she showed us where all of our classes were. As we passed each of my classes, their location slipped my mind. I wasn't paying attention to the lady as we walked through the halls.
The lady led us to each of our classes that were in session currently. It was only first period still.
She dropped Keaton to his class first and then we found mine. It was my world history class. The lady knocked and opened the door.
The larger teacher smiled at us, "You must be Keeley! I'm Mrs. Kingsley." The lady introduced her self and pointed me to an empty seat.
My face lit up when I saw who I was sitting next to. "Gavin!"
He groaned and rolled his eyes. Gavin turned his face the other way and ignored me.
I huffed and got my phone out. The teacher decided to not teach anything today and gave us a free day. I texted Eiley. "Hey, my dood! So sorry I haven't texted. Been busy." I waited for her to respond, but since she was probably in school, she most likely wouldn't respond. I texted Keaton instead, "Hey, Keat! I'm bored."
He sent a quick text telling me he'd text me later because the teacher was explaining something. I turned back to Gavin. He was talking to a group of friends who gathered around his desk.
I gave a small smirk to myself and squeezed in. I cut Gavin off mid sentence and introduced myself to the group of people, "I'm Keeley."
A few people gave me stares but they slowly decided to tell me who they were.
"I'm Jackson, but everyone calls me Jack," a tall guy who had dark brown hair and tanned skin said with a smile. He was pretty cute, not as cute as Gavin, though. His plain white shirt hugged his body, showing his muscles.
"Reggie," a darker skinned guy brightly smiled. The boy wore a loosely fitting shirt.
"I'm Andrew, but everyone calls me red," the palest guy
with bright red hair and freckles explained. He had cute dimples and a charming smile. I'd never seen an ugly red head guy, and this guy was no exception.
There were a few other guys, but I zoned out. They finished introducing themselves.
Reggie asked, "Where are you from?"
"Originally from Texas, but we've always moved around a lot. I just moved from New York," I explained. He nodded.
One of the guys who I didn't pay attention to questioned, "You got a boyfriend?"
I gave him a teasing smirk, "Wouldn't you like to know?"
"Oh come on!"
"Fine," I sighed, "If I must answer, I shall. I don't have a boyfriend if you must know." I rolled my eyes.
The guys continued throwing questions to me until the bell rang. Everyone got up and left, and I went in the direction I thought my next class was in.
Turns out I was wrong, my class was not where I was going. I stopped a girl in the hall where my next class was and she happily pointed me in the right direction.
The bell had rung before I arrived to my class. The teacher understood why I was late and I sat next to Red from earlier who so happened to be in my class.
"Hey, Red! Long time no see, huh?" I chirped as I plopped down in the seat next to him.
He chuckled and agreed, "Yea, it's been like a trillion hours."
The teacher hushed everyone down and handed out a pop quiz. I looked it over and stood up. I never learned any of this stuff. This wasn't fair, I shouldn't have to take it.
I brought it to her and quirky explained that I hadn't learned the material. Her old eyes gave me a blank stare and she told me I had to take it.
I shook my head rapidly, "If I take this, I will fail."
The old lady shrugged, "Not my fault."
"I'm not taking this!" I refused. This was unfair to me.
She gaped at me and told me to go to the office.
"I don't know where it is."
"I'm not playing with you, young lady. Office, now," she growled out with a sharp glare piercing through me.
"Fine," I walked out of the room aimlessly walking around, hoping to maybe find the office.
