Chapter 6: Catch and Throw

"Mr. Principal-" I started before he cut me off.
  "Mr. Pine," he corrected.
I rolled my eyes, "Mr. Pine, this teacher tried making me take a quiz over material I never learned. Today was my first day, and this teacher threw a quiz, for a grade nonetheless, my way. I explained I wasn't taking it because it was unfair, so she kicked me out a told me to go to the office. It took me around an hour to even find the office again, and so now I'm explaining my end of the the story," I informed the principal leaving it the small detail of me yelling at her.
"Miss Jones, I'm going to let you off with a warning this time. Next time please do not talk back to the teacher," the principal told me and sent me off to my next class.
The next few classes went uneventfully. Lunch was a whole other story.
It started off with me looking for my brother in the lunchroom, only to find him with my new friends, plus Gavin. I gave a smile and squeezed between Keaton and Red.
"Hey, Guys!" I chirped and stole a fry from Keaton's plate.
He slapped my hand and growled out, "Leave my food alone."
"Oh hush it," I pushed his shoulder as I grabbed another fry.
"Tryouts are tomorrow Keaton," Gavin informed.
Keaton nodded and I asked, "Do I have to stay until after you finish?" He nodded again and I groaned.
"Don't worry! You'll have us to stare at to keep you busy," Jack cockily waved to his body.
I rolled my eyes. "Mhmm... not much to see."
Jack's mouth dropped, but he transformed it into a small smile.
"I think I'll just walk home tomorrow, I don't want to go blind watching these losers try to show off," I joked as I waved my hand to the guys.
Keaton gave me a blank stare, "You don't walk. Ever. You couldn't make it ten minutes."
"Actually, I walk a little!" I defended myself.
Reggie spoke up, "I can drive you home if you want. I'm not able to play this year because of my grades."
Gavin went tense for no apparent reason. I thought for a moment before nodding, "That'd be great. I just have to ask my mom first. I'll tell you what she says tomorrow!"
The bell rang and we all left the cafeteria. I felt someone grab my arm and gently guided me to a sparsely populated hall.
Gavin warned me, "Don't ride with Reggie." He spoke with a firm voice like a parent would with a child.
I furrowed my eyes in confusion, "Why shouldn't I ride with him?" He seemed like a nice enough guy.
  He sighed, "Trust me. Don't."
"I need a valid reason!" I said in a singsong voice with a tempting smile.
"Don't." Gavin firmly commanded as he rolled his eyes and walked away.
I pondered for a few moments whether I should listen to him or not. Reggie was really nice to me and offered a ride. What was wrong with him?
I shrugged and decided to heed Gavin's warnings. He's been here a lot longer, so he probably knows the guy a lot better than I do.

"Whoop, Whoopp! We're home!" I yelled as I slammed the door open. I jumped in surprise when I saw an unexpected lady sitting on the couch with my mom. I gave a sheepish grin, "Hey, Mrs. Melissa!"
"Hello, keeley. It's nice to see you dear," She gave a genuine smile.
"Melissa was insisting for us to go to a banquet hosted for the Bayreach police officers!" My mom explained with enthusiasm. "I, of course, agreed for us to go."
"When is it?" Keaton asked as he finally entered the room carrying a sandwich.
  "Tomorrow night," Mrs. Melissa answered.
"Tryouts are tomorrow," he stated. He wouldn't miss them for the world. Football was his life.
Melissa waved her hand, "Coach will allow you and Gavin leave early enough to get ready. He knows how important these banquets are to the officers and their family."
He nodded and I panicked. "Do we have to wear dresses to this thing?"
She nodded. "It's also preferred for everyone to have an escort. Gavin will most likely agree to be yours." My face lit up with a grin. I was going to drive him insane tomorrow night. "Keaton, you can ask one of the girls from your school."
"Is it fine if it go alone? My girlfriend is back in New York," Keaton asked. Eiley wasn't the jealous type, but I don't think she'd be too happy hearing her boyfriend is taking another girl with him as a date.
Mrs. Melissa nodded and finished explaining the ends and outs of the event to us. She gave us a rough rundown of what would happen during the banquet and stressed how important it was to be on our best behavior.
My mom drove her home after our meeting. Keaton called over the guys, Red, Gavin, and Jack, over to the house to practice a little before tryouts tomorrow. He asked my mom before inviting them.
All of them arrived a while later. I'd already propped my feet on the table while slouching on the outdoor couch. I secretly enjoyed watching the guys play ball, or even just throw the ball.
I enjoyed joining in even more, though. Keaton would sometimes use me to practice with him when we went on vacation or over the summer when Dad couldn't help him. I'd actually become quite a good thrower and catcher over the many years of helping him.
Once all of the guys arrived they started tossing the ball around. I studied their movements, attempting to point out any flaws they made.
"Wait for the ball to come to you, Jack! Don't reach for it!" I instructed as Jack fumbled one of his passes.
"Do you even know what you're talking about?" He challenged me. I could see Keaton's expression change to a smirk.
I stood up and walked next to him. He stood a good two feet taller than I, but his height was only a number. No one intimidated me. No one. "Throw me one," I commanded Gavin as I got into a ready stance.
The ball barely thudded against my finger tips as I caught it. "I hope you don't throw like that in the game," I rolled my eyes at his weak throw and whipped it back to him. They didn't think I could catch a pass, but little did they know. "Again, but this time could you actually throw it, Grandpa."
This time when Gavin threw the ball to me, he added a little more speed. It wasn't as fast and hard as he did with the guys, but it proved my point. I knew what I was talking about.
"Wow, I didn't realize you knew how to throw and catch," Jack said in amazement. I guess most of the girls around here didn't know the difference between a football and a basketball.
"Yea, I know, Im great!" I gave a smile and shrugged. Keaton rolled his eyes but didn't say anything. I jabbed the ball into Jack's side, "Don't move your hands, idiot."
He nodded and I let them get back to their game of catch. I got everyone a bottle of water and brought them out side.
  "Here's some water, Losers!"

This story is doing terrible so I might not finish it... but here's another chapter.
