Loved Him Then
By Desire Shaw
She hated him.
Even after all that he had done for her
She hated him.
You loved him then, she heard
As her mother spoke of a time she did not remember
When things were calm and simple
When the only thing that mattered was having ice cream for dinner.
Where did the love go?
Was it there one day and gone the other?
Or did it slowly churn in her heart, as one turned to another?
"He loves you." Her mother said.
She knew that.
After all, it showed through the slaps and hits and cuts and bruises
The only thing linking them together, her mother, kept her sane.
"I won't see him after you're gone." She said.
Her mother laughed it off as a teen's angst
Only he heard the truth ringing in her voice.
