Christmas Eve

Christmas holidays had finally come up. James had invited the rest of the marauders back to our house and to his delight, I had invited Lily. She had been reluctant at first, for that very reason. The first few days had actually been a little awkward whenever the two of them were in the same room, but now it was Christmas eve and they were getting along just fine. James had actually toned down the flirting, although my guess was that he had just run out of pick up lines.

I had particularly excited that James had invited Remus, but nobody needed to know that. My feelings for the boy were a complete secret.

For the last few days, the boys had been putting up mistletoe everywhere. James, in hopes of catching Lily underneath it and the others in hopes of catching and embarrassing me. Sirius was the first to catch me and was quite surprised when I pecked his cheek and just walked away. In the next few hours, this happened between me and all the guys. Actually it happened between Lily and I once or twice as well. Now it was sort of a joke between the six of us.

When the marauders, Lily and I are together, we almost never sleep. So now, even though it was Christmas Eve, we were all exhausted from not sleeping much the past week. That didn't stop us from being loud and bizarre before everybody (excluding me) was too tired to stay awake. Even though I still had energy left, I went upstairs with Lily.

Lying in bed, I couldn't sleep. It was as if there was still this excitement in the air that made me want to get up. There was no reason not to, so I did. Letting the cold air hit me, I pulled a blanket over my shoulders and slowly crept out of the room, careful to not wake Lily. Walking down the stairs, I could see the light of the fire, still lit and going strong. Somebody had probably put a charm on it to keep it from dying. The Christmas trees lights were off, but some of the glass ornaments caught the fire light, creating orange and reddish patterns on the wall and floor.

As I walked through the doorway, I realized that someone was sitting on the couch. Hearing the creaking of the steps, this person had turned to see who was coming down the stairs.

"Hey, Moony." I said, smiling at the boy sitting in front of me.

"Hey."

I climbed over the back of the couch and plopped down next to him.

"Can you not just come around the couch?" He laughed.

"A normal person would."

"And you're not normal?"

"'Course not. I strive to be different like that."

"Believe me, I know."

"So what are doing out here? Waiting for Santa, so you can open your presents early?" I tease him.

"Nah, just couldn't sleep. What about you?"

"Oh, I'm here to catch Santa."

"Really?" He smiled.

"Yeah, I figure if I hold him hostage for a while, I'll get all the presents I want." I said jokingly.

"I'm sure that'll work." Remus said sarcastically.

That's when a small leaf came twirling down from above us. We both looked up to see more mistletoe hanging above us.

"Is it growing? I swear there wasn't any here earlier." I said.

"Probably the work of James and Sirius. Prongs will probably cover the whole house in this stuff if he thinks he can kiss Lily." Remus claimed.

I laughed and he leaned in, kissing my cheek. In that moment, I thought Fuck it. As he pulled away, I moved with him, putting my hand on his cheek and catching his lips instead. He kissed me back almost right away, his arm going around my waist as I moved closer to him. All of sudden he pulled away, letting me go.

"Is something wrong?" I asked him, a little confused as to why he pulled away so fast.

"No, it's just... well, yes. You're Prongs' sister. He would kill me and I really shouldn't be trying to start anything up with you. Or anyone, but especially you, I would hate myself if I hurt you. Look, I like you, but it's just not a good idea. I'm not meant to be with anyone, it wouldn't be fair to you."

"Remus, don't give me that bullshit, I don't care what James thinks and neither should you."

"It's not just James-"

"No, I know. I know what you think of yourself and I know you don't think that you deserve to be with someone, but you're wrong. You deserve so much more than that. Remus you're one of the best people I've ever met and I really like you. I want to be with you, I don't care about your furry little problem."

"I'm telling you it wouldn't be fair to you."

"No, it would be fine. You know what wouldn't be fair? To either of us? You trying to keep us apart because you're afraid of hurting me. Or James trying to keep us apart because us being together would make him uncomfortable."

"You do realize that that will probably happen."

"Yeah, but he's my brother, I'll just beat his ass and we'll be fine."

He laughed and then looked at his hands, sighing.

"Okay." He smiled.

"Okay?" My lips turned up into a smile.

"Okay, you are the most stubborn human being I have ever met and I clearly won't be able to change your mind, so okay."

I smiled and leaned in, kissing him for the second time that night.

"You're what?!" James almost shouted.

"James, calm down." I told him.

"What do you mean you're dating Moony?!"

"What do you think I mean?"

"You can't date Moony!"

"Why not?"

"Because he's one of my best friends! He's one of your best friends!"

"And now he's my boyfriend. James, I don't care if you don't approve of this, it's happening, okay?" And with that, I left James sitting on the couch, stunned, to go find Remus and tell him the news was out.
