The End

Everywhere he went was nothing but darkness and silence. The air surrounding him was cold and suffocating, tightening his chest. He was standing amidst the ruins of which once was a lively place as the rain poured down on him, unforgiving almost, as if to mock him.

"This isn't the world you had envisioned, Erwin.", he whispered bitterly as he looked at the raindrops filling his palm. The wounds on his body stung with each movement, but he couldn't care less about them at that moment.

After the last wall broke down, the titans destroyed everything, killing everyone in their way. On that day he was on an expedition with his unit and when they returned to the walls, they found the cities devastated and abandoned. During their encounter with the many titans that swarmed the place, they got split up in the heat of the fight. He survived thanks to his outstanding skills which earned him the title of humanity's strongest soldier. It was unknown to him whether there were other survivors.

Since then the raven haired young man has been roaming the land all by himself, in search for other people, equipped with his maneuver gear and a bag.

"I need new clothes.", the young man muttered as he looked at the holes in his trousers. The green cape which carried the emblem of the survey corps was tattered and stained with blood, but he still held onto it. He was on his way to a small town called Dalton as he wanted to seek shelter from the upcoming storm and it was the nearest one to his location.

The wounds he got during his fights with the titans started to burn again, slowing him down. He could feel his cheeks burn, but he knew that he couldn't stop at that moment, since he had to seek shelter before the storm arrived. Though he was panting from exhaustion, he forced his legs to continue walking towards the destination.

On his way to Dalton, he passed by a vacant oil facility, which was gigantic and enclosed by a wall of bricks and debris. He could hear the noises of numerous hungry titans coming from within the area, but they could not pass the barricade. At a closer look, the walls seemed rather unstable, so it would only be a matter of time until they would come out. "If these walls were to give in, all hell will be let loose.", he mumbled.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-

The sun was starting to set when he finally reached the town's gate and he was greeted by a crooked and rusty sign, which didn't seem welcoming at all to him.

Welcome to Dalton - We've missed you

As he walked down the muddy street, he looked at the abandoned houses, which were partially overgrown by weeds and ivy or broken down. However, this area seemed to be untouched by the titans, in contrast to the previous ones he visited. Maybe the reason was this oil facility in which the most of them were trapped, he thought.

His stomach interrupted his thoughts with a loud growl.

He had been living off game meat and berries for the past months, but last week the food was sparse as he could not hunt properly due to his wounds. "Be quiet, will you?", he hissed as he rubbed his empty belly. Almost every building around him seemed to have a leaking roof. The more relived he felt when he finally found an ochre house with an appropriate roof next to the well.

Fortunately for him, the door wasn't locked, so he entered easily, after he stamped off the dirt on his shoes on the doormat.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-

The air in the house was not as stifling as he anticipated. He quietly closed the door behind him and took a look at the furniture. Everything was in place as if someone was still living here. This place was overflowing with books though. There were so many, that even the shelves couldn't take them all, so that they piled up on the floor.

The room he was in seemed to be a mixture of a living room and a kitchen. There was a dining table and a hearth with a huge kettle to his right and he could scent a whiff of cinnamon coming from there. In front of him was a staircase which must have led to the sleeping rooms.

Tired from all the walking, he sank into an armchair next to one of the many bookshelves and let out a sigh. He wanted to take a quick nap before looking for something to eat, so he put his maneuver gear on the ground, right after his backpack. After having slept on hard ground for so many nights, this was heart-balm to him. Memories of the time when he was still alongside his comrades flashed in his mind as he slowly fell asleep.

He did not know how much time has passed during his nap, but when he woke up, he could see from the opaque windows that it was already dark outside. Pleasant warmth wrapped his body and crackling sounds tingled in his ears. It took him a few seconds to realise that there was a fire burning brightly in the hearth.

He reached out for his gear only to find it missing. He cursed internally for being careless.

"Are you looking for this?", a female voice asked softly.

When he turned his head, he saw a young woman sitting on the staircase, pointing a sword at him. She looked a bit younger than him, but her eyes were full of confidence nonetheless.

"Sorry, I took your gear from you, but you barged into my house first, so I guess we're even.", she said.

After such a long time he had finally found another survivor, which left him at a loss for words. The young woman tilted her head and took a closer look at him. In her eyes, he was a rather small man and his clothes were ripped and covered in stains. Even though there was some distance between the both of them, she could still make out his wounds. His grey eyes looked dull and tired and his breathing was heavy.

She recognised the green cloak, the trousers and the boots he wore as the military uniform of the Survey corps. "Are you alone?", she asked him. He replied with "Yes.". At this she let out a sigh of relief.

"I can patch you up if you want to.", she offered him as she took pity on the raven haired man, "But you will have to leave this place tomorrow afternoon.".
