His Quirks

"Wait, what did you say?", you asked, your crooked brows reflecting your confusion. "You heard me the first time, brat.", Levi said as he handed you a broom, "Let's get to business now, shall we?"

You couldn't believe that the both of you were cleaning this old cottage in the middle of an apocalypse. No one would be bothered by the dust anyway, you thought to yourself. No one except for Levi apparently. You let out a sigh and started to sweep the ground. "If it makes him happy...", you mumbled slightly annoyed as you cleared the floor of the dust.

After having camped outside for a week, you both decided to find a town to rest properly. During your journey, you came across a lot of titans and it was wearing you two out. Before you left your hometown behind, you wrote a note to your brother on the walls of your house.

I am leaving this place in search for other survivors. I will live my life to its fullest. I pray that we meet again one day. Thank you for everything. I love you.

When you arrived at this place, you found a cottage near a well, which looked sturdy enough to withstand storms and isolated enough to keep you warm at night. However, Levi was dissatisfied with all the dirt inside, so he suggested (more like forced) you to help him clean the abandoned house. You gave in, when you saw the serious look on his face.

Being a little bit clumsy, you hit your little toe on one of the shelves. "Damnit!", you cursed, as you held your foot in agony. But it didn't stop at that. The vibration you created caused a really big  book to fall out of it and hit you right on your head. You fell to the ground with a huge dust cloud rising up, admitting your defeat.

"You can sleep later.", Levi scolded you, when he saw you lying on the floor. You mumbled something undistinguishable, like slavedriver, before continuing to clean. He flicked your forehead, to which you flinched, but left it at that. You rubbed your reddened forehead and ground your teeth at him, but he didn't pay attention to that anymore.

He had his own quirks, but you didn't dislike them. And thinking back, when the incident took place at your home, you couldn't get his smile out of your head. It would be nice, if you could see it again, you caught yourself thinking.

The building had many sleeping rooms, but you two of you decided to sleep in the same room because it was safer this way.

"Can I have the bed at the window?", you asked him with googly eyes. It was a habit of you, learned from the time you spend with your older brother and it always worked. "Whatever.", he replied in his usual cold way and walked over to the other bed which was next to a bookshelf.

"Everything's spick and span.", you admired as you let yourself fall onto the soft bed. "Of course it is. Otherwise we wouldn't be staying here.", he said.

After dinner, which consisted of fish and turnip, both of you went to bed.

"Ahhh, I'm exhausted.", you sighed as you snuggled the soft blanket, "This bed is so comfortable." - "Goodnight.", he sais as he blew out the candle.

"Were you in the army as well?", he suddenly asked into the darkness. You were surprised, because usually he was not that talkative, but then again, after a long time of wandering around by yourself, even someone like Levi might get talkative.

"I'm sorry that I lied to you. I was never in the army. My brother and I...were thieves.", you confessed kind of embarrassed. He didn't say anything.

"Are you angry?", you asked timidly.

"No.", he simply replied. Somehow you were relieved with how sober he reacted to it.

"How did you learn to use the 3D maneuver?", he asked.

"Our parents were soldiers in the survey corps, but they died during a mission. My brother was 7 at that time and I was 2, so I don't have any memories of them. He was the one that taught me. He is very clever and a natural. Soldiers would often come to our town and during their stays, my brother always observed them. He taught himself how to use the gear with stolen equipment. Then he trained me when I turned 6."

He did not dislike the conversations he had with you, but he did not want to admit it.

The following days went by peacefully, with the two of you hunting, cooking and talking deep into the night, telling each other stories from your past. You learnt about his time as a Corporal in the survey corps and how he has lived in the underground before. Even though it must have been difficult for him, he told you how he lost his best friends to titans during his first mission outside of the walls.

"I admire you.", you said to him at one night, "You are strong, but kind at the same time. From the way you talk I can tell how much you cherish the people close to you. That's really admirable."

He felt a little bit embarrassed when you told him that, but he was also happy.

"Thank you, Levi."

"For what?"

"For asking me to come with you. For giving me reasons to live again."

It was cold when you woke up. You shuddered and put on a pullover, you found in one of the abandoned houses the day before. Levi was already awake, since he didn't sleep much. He was sitting on the edge of his bed, cleaning the blades of his swords.

He looked up and greeted you to which you smiled.

"We should depart tomorrow.", he said to you, "We have stocked up on gas and blades. It would be nice if we could find some horses one day." You agreed with him and yawned, still a bit drowsy. "Should we get some breakfast?"

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-

"Actually, I thought about going to that school building at the edge of the town.", you told him as you chewed your boiled potato, "I want to stock up on drugs and bandages. And chocolate would be nice." He gave you an odd look. "I can go by myself if you don't want to. You did tell me yesterday that you wanted to repair the guns we found the other day.", you added.

"I can't possible let you go by yourself.", he said. "But you can't go with me either, because you need to tend to our weapons.", you countered. "Is it that urgent?", he asked you, not wanting to let you go, because the building was still inside of the town's borders, but it was pretty far away.

"We don't know when we will stumble upon a town in this good condition again, so I would like to get as much as we can out of it.", you insisted. You could see that he was not okay with it, but he gave in.

"At least take this flare gun with you.", he told you as he handed said gun to you, "If anything should happen, you have to fire it into the sky and I will come for you at once, okay?"

You gratefully took it and smiled at him.

"No need to worry. I will be back this afternoon."

And with this you left after you finished your meal.
