Underlying Truths - Chapter Three - "Absence"

As I turned the corner of my street, I made a quick decision to visit Will at his house after visiting Spencer. Pulling into my own driveway and killing the engine, I glanced at the watch on my wrist, making note of the time. 3:48pm. I had worked two shifts in the morning and, after a lunch break, one in the afternoon. I leaned my head against the steering wheel for a few minutes, relishing in the small moment of peace.

I stepped out of my car and shrugged off the thin cardigan I had on. The sun was glaring down, its heat clearly felt by my skin. I walked around my car, a few steps down to the sidewalk, and jogged across the street after looking both ways down the road. I walked briskly to Spencer's front door, not wanting to stay out in the sun and heat for too long. I tried the door, finding it unlocked. As soon as I stepped in, I looked to my right, finding Spencer's brother, Greg, glancing over the back of the couch in the living room. I smiled and waved at him. He grinned and nodded in response and directed his head back at the TV in front of him, images of ESPN flashing across it.

I pulled my shoes from my feet, leaving them in a small area of the dark hardwood floors near the front door. I padded across the entrance area of their house

and into the living room where Greg sat.

"Hey, Greg?" I called out from where I was standing behind the couch.

He glanced back at me, muttering a small "hmm?" urging me to continue.

"So its only you and Drake left?" I asked.

He patted the empty seat next to him before answering me. As I made myself comfortable in their house's slightly worn leather couch, I felt at ease beside Spencer's older brother who was around two years older.

"Actually, Drake left with David. I think David's company's partner has a paid internship that Drake's interested in," Greg explained.

"Are you sure you can handle being alone with Spencer?" I asked him as I shifted around the couch so I could face him. Spencer was surely taking this much harder than the rest of his brothers.

"Spencer's actually learning to deal with it much faster than any of us expected," Greg said with a shrug. "He's been out of the house these past couple of days, which I think means that he's slowly slipping back into normality."

"Really?" I asked, slightly taken aback. "I never see him out and about and I almost come here every day."

"Well," Greg started. "He's always home by the time you come visit, which is kind of surprising seeing the time you visit isn't exactly consistent. Yet he manages to always be here by then."

I thought about it for a moment and blew off the strangeness of it all, deciding that it's just a whole mess of coincidences.

"I'm just glad that it seems that he's really starting to deal with it all," I said, feeling a tad bit glad and relieved. "I'm going to go see him. Know where I can find him?"

"He's in his room," Greg said.

"Don't forget to say goodbye when you leave," Greg called out as I began to walk away and climb the stairs.
