Rán stood at the edge of a shore. The tide ebbed and flowed, the dark waves washed over her bare feet and she sunk further into the sand as she felt the undercurrents beckon her to join them in the cold salty expanse. She felt at home, at peace and at once with the sea. Her heart beat in time to the lapping motions of waves rolling over waves, and she yearned to walk out and let it swallow her whole.

She stepped away from the water. She wouldn't let those thoughts consume her. Sand crunched under feet behind her, and she turned to face her younger brother.

"Mother wants to see you." Loki said. He stood in his formal wear; matte black armour with an emerald green cape. That meant visitors at the palace, visitors their father wanted to impress. She looked down at her own armour, hand-me-downs from the forgery that didn't fit the soldiers.

"Did she say what about?" She slipped on her boots and walked towards her brother who turned to walk alongside her, up the beach and up the path that lead back to the palace.

"Well, no, but just assume that she expects you to look pristine. No magick, she has called in beauticians to tend to this..." he flicked a lock of her dirty blonde hair, "mess."

Rán playfully shoved her brother, who laughed and nudged her gently back. She was suspicious of his kind behaviour, as Loki was usually a little brat and spared no expense to his sister. Though Thor was his favourite to tease, he certainly didn't go gentle on Rán. She eyed him as his smile dropped and he looked at his feet as they walked.

"You feel it too." He stated. Rán looked forward as they walked through a garden. Ivy draped all around them.

"Feel what?" She feigned naivety.

"Don't play ignorant, dear sister." He stopped and turned to her. "You know what I mean." His tone dropped, his voice colder than the sea she could still hear.

"I may feel it but in no way shall I act on it, little brother." Rán spat. How dare he accuse her of holding darkness inside. She ground her jaw before she spun on her heel and stormed into the castle.

Her chamber doors were already open when she got there. Her mother stood in the middle, assessing a dress that draped over her arms. She clucked her tongue against the roof of her mouth and handed it back to a maid with a shake of her head, "no, Rán needs something far more elegant." She halted in the doorway as maids dashed around the room, redecorating it in gold and fur. She stepped in, her boot echoed loudly against the gold walls. "Oh, Rán!" Her mother exclaimed. "Just in time, come choose a dress for dinner." She stepped aside from her position in front of the four poster bed to reveal a dozen dresses of various materials lay out on her bed. She walked towards them with a scrutinising gaze.

"Mother, what on earth is this for? First, Loki is in his best armour, and now this? Who has arrived?" She turned to her mother.

"Never mind for now, but choose a dress."
