part two: the rise of an empire

Her body was caught in a war for dominance between two currents: one, which tried to pull her to her left, and the other which tried to pull her down. Her dress was heavy and sodden with the weight of a thousand ships as it seemed to aid the current in dragging her body further down, down, down. Her green eyes were wide under the water but they did not sting. Her mouth was closed and her cheeks were full of air that she didn't dare expel, though there was no burn or ache in her chest that told her she needed to release the air. There was no desire to breathe, there was no crushing weight on her chest that told her she needed to retain all the air in her lungs. There was only the crushing weight of trying not to be pulled deeper and deeper into the abyss.

The water wasn't even cold. Her body thrashed about wildly as the two currents continued to fight and pull her in their separate directions, and the only thought that was on her mind was that she did not want to sink any deeper. Her hair whipped in front of her eyes as her pale hands clawed at her face to remove the wispy tendrils from her vision, which was slowly darkening due to the lack of light as the pull dragged her further down.

Debris floated in the water all around her. She did not know where she was, she did not know what had happened to her ship, her prison, and for once it felt like she did not know how to use magick. Water consumed her thoughts as she shut her eyes and gave in to the current, to the pull, and let her heavy dress pull her further down into the darkness she had grown so used to back on Asgard.

Asgard.

Her eyes opened with a wild anger as she thought of her home and her family who had banished her. The thoughts were as rough as the waves that yanked her around as she could only hope that they were living their miserable lives without her. She wondered how much trouble her curse had caused already.

She floated idly for a while before she felt weightless, like she was supported from underneath her. As though the current had changed its direction and was now pushing her upwards - but that was daft. Currents do not so suddenly change direction. She continued her venture upwards, lying helplessly against the pulse of water that drew her closer to the light, where rays of a planet's sun broke the water's surface and penetrated through, illuminating the aquamarine life - fish scattered away as she was torn upwards from the surface, the debris and wrecked ship long gone. She sat there on the water's surface, the waves lapped at her waist as she struggled to comprehend what had just happened.

Her pruned hand scratched at her forehead as her green eyes, framed by dark circles, scanned her environment. All she could see was the ocean, with no signs of it ever ending. And with that note, she pondered how she was able to sit above its surface and not sink to its murky, hidden depths. She frowned.

"I have waited for you." She flinched so hard that a wave came up from behind her and smacked into her back and knocked the wind from her chest. She didn't care to think how that had just happened as she sat and choked whilst a man appeared before her, and with effortless footsteps he seemed to glide across the surface without ever breaking it or causing a ripple. He smiled, his expression endeared, as he crouched at her feet. His hair was long, an unruly black curled by the sea salt and framed his heart shaped face. His strong jaw was graced with a stubble that seemed to blend smoothly upwards and fade into cheekbones that could carve cliffs. He wore a black cloak that hid his figure. He held out a hand. "My lady Rán. I have waited for you for as long as I have lived. Our destiny begins here, my Queen. I had searched all the oceans to find you, but never did I think that you would find me. At long last, who ever would've thought your circumstances would unite us. I always knew my Queen would be powerful." He smiled warmly though she couldn't feel the warmth he attempted to emit. She looked at the stranger oddly as a thousand thoughts flooded through her mind. Destiny? Queen? It didn't bode with her well. Not at all.

"Who are you?" She questioned with a sceptic look, her eyebrows furrowed and a frown at her lips. He smiled, his eyes twinkled with something she could only describe as mischief, desire and hunger.

"My dear, I am Aegir. God of the Sea."
