THE BANISHMENT OF RÁN ODINSDOTTIR
____

Thor sat at the end of his mother's bed; his head was buried in his hands, the heel of his palms pressed so hard against his eyes that behind the blackness of the pressure, white stars danced. His body heaved with silent sobs as he tried to grapple and fathom what had happened in the court a mere hour ago. Frigga sat beside him and watched in silence as raindrops attacked the windows, each drop a bullet and a harsh reminder of her daughter who had yet to learn how to wield water properly. Frigga's heart ached as she realised she would never be given the chance to teach her: as soon as her daughter's powers had become clear, it was too late.

The doors opened and closed softly as Sif entered the room with a cheerless look upon her face. Her troubled heart only grew at the sight of a devastated Thor. "It's not good news," she said quietly. "She has been imprisoned and Odin plans on banishment, yet Freyr is adamant on execution." She informed the pair. Thor groaned in languish at the news.

"I don't understand," He said with a pained voice as he looked up; his eyes bloodshot and raw with emotion as tears dried on his face - only for more to well up in his eyes. "It- it came out of nowhere, she was so fine and was smiling just yesterday. There were no signs of lunacy." He sniffled and wiped at his eyes.

"Paranoia doesn't always appear until it is most overwhelming." Frigga said, oh so wise. "She was clearly very good at hiding it, if your father nor I could detect any signs. But, we must look past this, as a family, as her banishment also means removing her from any history books, from the minds of others, from existence. We must stick together, we must not dwell on what could've been and rather look forward to how we grow and learn from this experience." She finished with a sad sigh. Thor turned to her with a bewildered expression.

"You're going to forget about her, just like that?" He said, a heat in his chest. Frigga shook her head.

"No, of course not, she is my daughter. But she had disgraced our name and I need to do my best to clear her actions and become the noble family we are. I love her, Thor, but what she has done is unforgiveable." She said as she caressed his jaw. Thor scrunched his face and bit his lower lip as Frigga looked at him sadly. She got up and left the room, and Sif walked over to Thor and took a seat beside him as he mulled over her words.

"Your mother is right, you know." She said and placed a palm on his knee. He stared at her hand though she did not remove it. "You should take this lesson and use it to help you grow, for when you are king. You need to train to be the very best, better than Odin, to never let something like this happen when you are on the throne. You are destined to be a great king, Thor. Odin can magick her memory away, but his conscience will still remain dirty. If you are great enough to never let this happen, you will never need to seek these efforts and in turn become a true king." She patted his knee once and left him alone in his mother's room, solitude to think and process the words as a thousand thoughts hit him at once.
