Sniffling, I reluctantly hung up the phone call with Aaron, yanking another tissue from the box by my side and blowing my nose violently. I groggily shuffled outside of my bedroom, shivers running down my spine with every step I took down the stairway. My mother quickly mumbled something about a quick run to the grocery store before the engine of her car roared to life from behind the garage door. Pausing at the bottom of the staircase, I squinted at my bare feet, struggling to recall why I wandered downstairs in the first place when I had the violent urge to sneeze.
The chiming of the doorbell was muffled by my sore ears, slowly, I outstretched one arm while clutching my abdomen with the other and twisted the knob.
A pink eared Aaron was perched upon the stoop of the porch, smiling softy at me. Before I could utter a word, my body convulsed, "Bless you, babe." He chuckled, stepping inside and gently closing the door behind him before wrapping a supportive arm around my waist and guiding me up the stairs.
"Wait," I sighed, pausing on the third step, my index finger pointing toward the ceiling. "I want tea." I whispered to myself, finally recalling what it was I had trekked into the hallway for. My brain was so muddled I couldn't comprehend that I was being guided towards my bedroom once again until I was tucked securely into the sheets of my bed. Aaron placed a gentle kiss on the top of my head before motioning for me to stay put.
Moments later, he returned with a steaming mug and bowl. "Here's your tea, Del." Aaron smiled, tipping the glass cup in between my lips, the comforting liquid dripping down my throat and warming my belly. I sighed as it soothed my raw throat, my eyes fluttering shut. His concerned voice snapped me out of my stupor, "I think you should try eating something." The edge of my bed dipped under his weight as he placed the bowl of warm soup in my clammy hands.
"Thank you." I rasped, slowly swallowing spoonfuls of broth. "You didn't have to come over, Aaron." I laughed to myself as he rubbed slow circles on my thigh underneath the covers, his expression serious as he continued to watch me eat. Aaron rolled his eyes, tucking a loose strand of hair that had fallen out of my messy bun behind my ear before cupping my cheek with his palm.
His lips twitched into a small smile as I leaned into his touch, "Now what kind of boyfriend would I be if I didn't take care of you?" He muttered sincerely, taking the empty bowl from my hands and placing it on my nightstand. He took both of my hands into his, rubbing small circles on my palms with his thumbs, "Now get some rest, baby." My heart warmed at the nickname as I patted the space beside me, silently asking him to stay.
"Are you contagious?" Aaron joked, earning a small slap on the shoulder from me. He slowly crawled into bed next to me, kissing my cheek and intertwining our hands, "I'm kidding." Aaron pulled me closer, wrapping his arms around my shivering frame and tugging the blankets over the both of us. I rested my head atop of his chest, the constant thumping of his heart lulling me to sleep.
