Secrets has definitely been one of the hardest stories for me to write.
Maybe it's because I've never felt the pain that the characters in my story did. And when you're a writer it's important to be able to connect to your story in many ways
So I guess I can say the way I connect to the story the most is by a quote my mom used to tell me when I was younger.
"Every action has a reaction"
Simple, yet so complex.
So I thought, what would happen If a person did something, something that ended up affecting everyone around her? And that's how Alice O'Conner was created.
Originally I didn't plan for the story to end so darkly.
But as the story progressed, I realized I wanted to make it as realistic as possible. And most stories like these don't end happily.
Rape and Suicide are probably one of the hardest things to talk about and deal with. Why? Because it makes people uncomfortable. So as I ended this story, I realized no one was going to get the justice they deserved. Because in the real world, thats how things would go.
Some of you might be curious about a line in my last chapter.
"It was a story of a certain kind of love."
What kind of love you might ask.
~The love between Mason and Alex- kept Alex from telling the truth. The love between Alice and Lizzie kept her hunting for the truth. The love between Alex and Lizzie kept Lizzie from handing in the flash drive,~
Thats the kind of love I was talking about. One of the deepest yet darkest versions of it.
Alex North killed himself in the end.
Probably one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. He's probably the most complex character I've ever written, because insides he's so soft and vulnerable, yet he has really thick skin.
I tried giving some hints, like the chapter based around his sleeping pills, yet a part of me wanted so desperately to keep Alex alive. For Lizzie's sake. Than I realized she could find a way to live, herself.
