"Are you still playing piano?" I asked, breaking the silence as Louis walked me home from the coffee house. He seemed shocked, he hesitated before he answered.
"I uh.. I haven't played in a while no. Not since the summer after senior year." He said as he looked down at his shoes, kicking rocks across the pavement.
"Why?" He questioned as he looked up at me.
"You were so good. Like, ridiculously good. I remember walking down the hall during free period and hearing the piano," I remembered, smiling at him as I spoke. "I stopped and thought, 'That is the most beautiful song I have ever heard.' I must have stood at the door listening for almost the whole time, because I remember the bell ringing and scaring me to death." I laughed. I turned and looked at Louis, who was staring at me, puzzled.
"I never knew that..." He trailed off. It was silent for a moment before he stopped abruptly, grabbing my hand.
"Do you want to go to the music shop? Not the new one on Main Street, but the old one further back?" His eyes lit up as he asked, and I was so surprised at his change of demeanor it took me a second to respond.
"O-of course! I've always loved that one the most."
He smiled at my response, intertwining his finger with mine and pulling me down the street with his long strides making me jog a little to catch up. I just stared at him, his 'big bad man who didn't have emotions' presence quickly switched to a child who's going to meet Santa. I smiled to myself, thinking about how this was him in high school. So sweet, so passionate about music. We walked up to the doors of the shop, Louis letting go of my hand to let me go in first as he held the door open. There's aisles with music sheets, guitars, and pretty much anything that has to do with playing an instrument. In the back, there's a set up of all different instruments like a drum set, guitars here and there, and a grand piano. I used to come here and watch people play all the time, I wonder of anyone still does. From the looks of how no one is here, I suspect not. Louis quickly pulled me to the back, and rushed over to the piano. He stood there for a minute, just looking at it. I could tell he was nervous, his back muscles tensing up at the instrument he used to love, but abandoned.
I quietly cleared my throat, breaking him out of his thoughts. He turned around, looking at me questioningly.
"Will you play for me?" I shyly asked. A shy smile broke out on his face as he nodded.
"I- yeah..." He smiled down at his shoes. "Anything for you."
He glanced up nervously after saying that, but relaxing after noticing how I was blushing at his words. I walked over and pulled out the bench, sitting down and patting the seat next to me, inviting him to sit down. Once he sat down, he coughed nervously, popping his fingers before setting them gently on the keys. I looked up at him, his face concentrated and beautiful. He let out a shaky breath, calming himself before he began to play. I immediately noticed the song; it was the song I stood listening to just over two years ago in that empty hallway. It was my favorite, and I never even knew what it was called. His hands moved across the keyboard, his fingers delicately pressing the buttons almost as if he was scared to break them. The song played throughout the small store, the melodious notes sweetly echoing off the walls.
Louis was relaxing, becoming more and more comfortable with playing. I was amazed at how perfectly he played the song, not even missing a single note, even after two years. I quietly watched him play the song, listening to him quietly hum along. When he finished, he turned to me and smiled. He was the human embodiment of sunshine, the amount of happiness he felt shining through his gorgeous smile. I couldn't help but smile too, for his smile was contagious.
"Thank you." He nudged me with his elbow, still smiling. "I never would have done this without you." I blushed, looking down at my hands in my lap.
"Thank you, that was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. I love it." He reached down, placing a gentle kiss to my cheek. I could feel my face getting red, blushing immediately. He laughed softly at my reaction, pulling my hand into his.
"Please tell me we can do this again sometime?" He pleaded. I laid my head down on his shoulder, confirming my answer.
"I would love that."
