Sanitation and waste removal are also important subjects. Studies conducted by the World Health Organization, an international public health agency, show that poor observation of sanitary practices have resulted in numerous pandemics throughout history, including the Middle Age outbreak known as the Black Death, which killed tens of millions of people worldwide.

Improper waste removal can also cause great harm, and in Deuteronomy 23:12-13, the Lord commanded the Israelites to have a designated place outside the camp where they could relieve themselves. They were to each carry a shovel with them so that they could dig a hole, and then cover their waste with soil when finished. This is recorded as having occurred around 3,500 years ago, yet up until World War 1 (1914-1918) more soldiers died from diseases than actual battle because they did not isolate human waste.
