I had fallen asleep. I slept soundly for the first time in years.
When I finally rose from sleep, I found myself in an unfamiliar bed, in an unfamiliar room, filled with unfamiliar things, and laying on the couch by the window was a VERY unfamiliar person! My young, teenage mind automaticly assumed the worst, and in a wave of hysterical panic, I threw the covers aside and sprinted out the door. I didn't try to be quiet, so as I tried to make my hasty escape, I rammed my toe into the leg of a table, let out a shrill cry, and fell onto the floor with a loud THUMP, my head connecting with the floor. I groaned and layed there in an early morning daze.
"What the hell..?"
My head was still throbbing from the hard blow, so I didn't notice the figure leaning against the door frame, rubbing sleep from his eyes. I kept my eyes closed, my head pounding painfully.
"Owww..."
"Oh, CRAP! What the hell did you DO!?" I heard rushed footfalls as the figure fell onto his knees by my side and propped my head up. I opened my eyes just enough to see who it was.
"Wren..?"
"Yeah, what?" He said absently as he scanned my body for injuries. "What did you fricken do, you idiot?" He mumbled.
"Dammit.." I murmured. Of course it was Wren! I must have fallen asleep on... the floor... and he must've put me on... his bed... The more I tried to make sense of the situation, the worse it sounded... "Dammit!"
"What's got you so worked up?"
"Everything..." Then my eyes grew wide as the memories from yesterday flashed through my mind. I looked at him, my brows furrowed as the last words I remembered floated like a whisper through the memories.
"... then I won't find the one who can make it all okay..." I whispered. Wren looked at me, his eyes revealing his astonishment.
"Y-you heard that?"
I nodded. He leaned back on his heels and stared at me. He rubbed the back of his neck and let out a loud sigh, closing his eyes.
"You caught me... you said that... you let me sleep in your bed... you brought my here with the intention of punishing me, but you didn't... you helped me get back to the town even after you said you didn't like me... and you protected me, a complete stranger, from being attacked and possibly killed by that wolf..." I listed, watching his expression change as I spoke. "Now, if you supposedly don't like me, why would do all that? Why would you be so nice to me if you don't care for me in the slightest?"
He looked away.
"You were the only one..." He stopped.
"The only one what?"
Then he looked me straight in the eyes. "The only one I feel I should be around. The only one I feel I should get to know. The only one that is in the same sad state that I'm in. No one else gets how hard it is..."
"... to lose someone they loved..."
"No one else knows how hard it is..."
"... to be beaten and broken so many times..."
"No one else..."
"... except..."
"You"
