I come around on the ground of the alley. Slowly, I peel my eyes open. It is still night, and there is no sign of Will. Will. I choke back a sob. He has been tormenting me for years but I never, ever thought he would try to kill me.

Wait. I’m alive. I am actually alive. My ribs are killing me. I think I have broken one, at the very best bruised, and my cheek aches. But I am alive. I raise my fingers to my neck. It is sore and stiff, maybe bruised. I wince.

“Miss?” a voice comes from behind me.

Slowly, painfully, I turn my head. To my surprise it is Liam.

“Liam?” I whisper. I can’t make much noise because of my neck.

He rushes over to me and grabs my hand.

“Ohmygod are you ok? I mean obviously your not ok but are you all right? Wait no I mean-“

I cut him off. “Just…shut…up!” I don’t mean to sound rude but he is making my head hurt. He swallows.

“Right. Sorry.”

There is an awkward silence for a minute but then Liam speaks again.

“So; that man. Was he your boyfriend?”

I couldn’t help it. Despite myself, despite how much it hurt… I laughed. “My boyfriend? God no. No that was my brother.”

“Your brother?! Why was he treating you like that?”

“Trying to kill me you mean? Well, he always has been psychotic. And ah, it’s a long story.”
