When Ponyboy and I walked up to Lillian's front door, I wasn't sure if the door was going to be locked or not. I pressed down on the handle and we were able to walk right into her living room. In the matter of seconds, we realized we walked right into the middle of an argument.
"No, you can't," Lillian said firmly.
"Come on, Lillian!" Two whined from the couch. "Y'all talk about it all the time. Can't we just watch it?"
"No, means no," she snapped at him.
Ponyboy and I slowly looked at each other with matching puzzled expressions on our faces. His eyebrows were stitched together and his eyes were wide. We were mutually trying to figure out what they were talking about.
"What are you guys talking about?" Ponyboy asked, kicking his shoes off.
"They want to watch the movie," Lillian told us.
"The movie?" I raised my eyebrows. Of course they want to watch it. Even I want to watch it now that I am in it.
"And read the book," Lillian added.
Two added, "but I don't wanna read."
"I do," Steve stated.
"You can't read, Two," Pony sneered. He just loves to bring that up.
Jenni was sitting on the couch, with Soda and Two sandwiching her. Steve was at the dining room table and Darry was sitting in Lillian's dad's armchair. I bet both of her parents were at work, they usually work on Saturdays. They work a lot, I've hardly seen them this summer.
"Why can't they?" I asked, realizing how pointless that rule was now. It has all already happened. Why does it matter?
"They would know too much!" She looked at me like I was the one that wasn't making any sense.
"About stuff that already happened? They've already lived through it, they know what happened," I pointed out.
"I'm confused," Ponyboy spoke up.
"I was snoopin' and found some book called The Outsiders," Dally explained. "I read the first couple pages and it is about us. All of us. You, me, Johnny, Two, Darry, Soda, Steve, and Bri. We are all in it. Lillian won't let us read it. Then, we found a... thing with the same name."
"A thing?" I asked.
"They found the movie," Lillian disclosed quietly.
"Oh," I whispered. They don't know what a DVD case looks like.
"And this stick in the mud won't let us watch it." Steve jabbed his thumb toward Lillian. Then he turned to Soda and asked, "did Bri tell you about it?"
"There's no way he knows what it is," I stated.
"No, but I'm very intrigued." Soda looked at me and asked, "what is it? How could you not have told me?"
"It's complicated," I reasoned.
"How can there be something you didn't tell me about that sounds that cool?" He asked, a little hurt.
"I've been a little stressed out the past year," I said sarcastically. "I think you guys can watch it now, it can't hurt anything."
"You know what? Fine. Fine. Do what you want with them. I'm going to work on the Machine." Lillian stormed off and into her invention room. The door shut, leaving us all silenced for just a moment.
"Damn." Steve whistled.
I think she's a bit stressed about getting this Time Machine to work. It's only been about a month, but she isn't close to getting done. Maybe later I can talk Steve into helping her. He did fix the first one, maybe he can help build it this time. He is really good with cars and machines, I think he would be a helpful assistant.
