I continued to shovel cereal into my mouth, staring at the wall behind Brigette. I wasn't really focusing on anything in particular.
Suddenly a hand was on my shoulder.
"Sara?" Bridgette asked, concern clouding her eyes. Her touch was gentle and kind, but it contained unwanted sympathy. I shrugged her off, looking down at my bowl. I off-handedly moved my cereal around with my spoon, desperately attempting not to make eye contact with the concerned girl in front of me.
"What?" I asked, continuing the very intense staring contest with my breakfast.
"Are you okay?" She asked, slowly pulling her hand away from me. She continued when I didn't respond, "stupid question. Of course you're not okay. What I mean is, if you need to talk to someone, I'm always here. I may seem like an immature jokester, and most of the time I am, but I'm also a good listener when it's needed. "
I glanced up at her and she smiled slightly, her beautiful eyes sparkling. I was about to tell her thank you, when a boy I didn't recognize walked in. He had dark brown, uncombed hair that hung sloppily in his eyes. He was about two inches taller than me, and the one eye I could see through his bangs was an unnervingly bright purple, almost neon.
A look of surprise crossed his face, and he stepped back.
"Woah, Brigette, where'd she come from?"
"Her name is Sara, and she's a new rarity."
"Well that didn't exactly answer my question. I mean, she's obviously a rarity! She's got purple eyes! By I asked where she ca-"
"WHAT!? BRIGETTE, WHERE'S THE BATHROOM?!" She pointed across the hall and I ran from the room, staring at myself in the mirror. Sure enough, my eyes were purple. There was no doubt about it. But unlike the others, they didn't match. One was a shade of plum, like the edges of Brigettes eyes, but the other one was so light in color
it was nearly white.
"What even-" I said under my breath.
"Funky." A voice said from behind me. I shrieked, spinning around and hitting my hip on the counter. Hard.
"Sorry. Didn't mean to scare ya." It was the guy from a minute ago. "But your eyes are cool, dude! I've never seen a rarity with two different eyes before!"
"Great." I mumbled, rubbing my hip. I could already tell it would bruise.
"Anyways, I'm Seth." It seemed he was about to say something when Jace appeared behind him.
"Seth, why are you cornering Sara in the bathroom?" He asked, crossing his arms and smirking.
"Jace! Bud! I wasn't exactly cornering her. Ya see, she basically Usain Bolted out of the kitchen when I mentioned her eyes. It's like she'd never seen them before!" Seth said, laughing.
"Well, that would probably be because she hadn't." Jace answered, looking the shorter boy in the eyes.
"Wait what?"
"Her eyes changed later than the rest of us, probably because she was found later. Ours didn't change until we came to quarters, and neither did hers. Just because you've had purple eyes since age nine doesn't mean she has."
"Ohhhhhhkay then. Gotta go." With that, Seth spun around, hurrying back up the stairs.
"What was that? I asked, tilting my head at Jace.
He shook his head, shrugging. "Who knows. He always tends to somewhat avoid me. Almost seems afraid of me sometimes. Dunno why."
I looked Jace up and down, for the first time really noticing his looks. He looked like someone who spent some time at the beach. He had Sandy brown hair that stuck up in the front, and lightly tanned skin, freckles dotting his nose. He was about 6 feet tall, and was thin but muscled. He were black jeans, converse, and a grey t-shirt covered in cacti.
"You're eyes ARE cool. Definitely different, but cool." He commented, grinning at me.
"Weird. They're weird." I replied, slipping past him and making my way back towards the kitchen. He followed.
