A/N Hello! Sorry this took a while, but I've been really busy. Updates will usually take a month or so, because I have a lot of homework and after school activities :)
I hugged my knees to my chest as we sped down the road, gradually slowing down until we reached the normal speed limit.
"What about my family?" I whispered.
"Huh?"
"My family. When I don't come home, when I don't answer my phone. What will my parents do?"
He didn't answer. He just stared blankly out the front windshield, biting on the inside of his cheek. Just when I was about to ask again he said,
"We'll talk about that later."
"But-"
"Later." He replied in a sharp voice. You could tell there would be no reasoning with him.
"Fine." I mumbled, turning my body so that my temple was leaning against the window, the scenery flashing past my eyes. I crossed my arms and tried to pass the time as we made our way to, well, who knows where. I had no idea where he was taking me, and all my instincts were screaming,
"Run! Get away from this dude and his sketchy van!" I mean, we're brought up being told not to talk to strangers, and to never get into their car, right? Well today I have talked to a random boy who yanked me into some bushes (cause that's not weird at all, right?), I've ran with him from screaming dudes as he used nature powers to deter them, and I've willingly got into his van and let him drive away. Either my parents didn't tell me enough times, I just didn't listen, or you know, running for my life may have influenced my decision. Probably the last one.
*******Hello I am Mo the line break. I will visit you often! Please keep your arms and legs inside the cart at all times. For now, we are traveling 2 hours into the future!!!*******
I spun a loose thread from my sweater between my fingers as I continued to watch the landscape rush by. The road had stretched into a long, nearly deserted highway. I would occasionally catch sight of another car, speeding towards us, but once it was past we would be alone again for another 30 minutes or so.
"Great," I thought "if he murders me there won't be any witnesses."
We were surrounded in green hills. Every once in a while i would catch a quick glimpse of a farmhouse, nestled between the rolling hills.
"It would be nice to live here." I stated.
Jace looked surprised that I had spoken. He suddenly straightened in his chair, the car swerving a little.
"Woah! Keep control of the vehicle!"
"Sorry you were quiet for so long. I almost forgot you were here. What did you say?"
"Nice to know i'm so easily forgotten. And I said it would be nice to live here. The rolling hills, hardly any noise from cars, you could have horses, and the stars, oh the stars. These roads aren't lined in street lamps, there aren't any neighborhoods with lots of lights, no cities nearby... You could see the stars perfectly. it would be so beautiful. Of course, getting groceries would be a hassle, but you could farm! And the things you couldn't grow, well you'd just buy more at a time, wouldn't you? Besides, a drive to town would be worth all this. Right?
"Well, I never really thought about it... But yea, I guess it would be nice."
"And to be nestled in between those hills. like a hug, or a warm blanket. It would just be wonderful."
"I guess so." After that we went silent. I still wasn't sure about this guy. After all, I didn't know anything about him.
The land had slowly turned to empty, dry land. The skeletons of bushes rimmed the side of the road and the occasional tumble weed would bounce across the pavement. In the distance I could see large wind turbines, tall, smooth, and white, slowly rotating in the breeze.
"We're going to eastern Washington, aren't we?"
"Maybe, why?"
"I've driven here quite a few times. When I was younger I used to spend a good part of the drive picturing myself on a horse, galloping over those grassy hills. Then I would reach this part, and I would get really sad. I always asked my parents why nobody let the land have any water, it was obviously thirsty." I chuckled, and for the first time since those men showed up, a small smile worked its way across Jace's face.
"Yes, we are going to Eastern Washington. About 50 miles outside of Pullman."
"OK but what's there? What is it that we are driving 5 hours to get to?"
"Quarters."
"That doesn't help. At all."
"Well sorry princess but that's all I can tell you at the moment."
"Do not call me princess."
"Whatever you say. Princess."
" I mean it."
"Fine, fine, whatever."
I leaned back in my seat, satisfied. I knew that I shouldn't fall asleep considering I didn't completely trust him yet, but I couldn't help it. My eyelids grew heavier the longer I attempted to keep them open. Finally, I drifted off, sinking into the warmth of the darkness.
*******MO IS HERE TO TELL YOU THAT THIS IS A 2 HOUR TIME SKIP*******
I awoke to someone shaking my shoulder and said something really close to,
"Wublocwrilcqmnkjnq?!"
"We're here."
Then I remembered. The nature powers, the guys chasing us, me willingly getting in his van...
"Give me a second to wake up."
"Fine. You have two minutes to be out of the van. I'll wait outside."
"Yea yea whatever. I'll be there in a minute."
He straightened up, grabbed the door handle and stepped out of the car, slamming the door behind him. By the time I joined him, he was leaning against the side of the van, staring into empty space.
"Whatcha looking at?"
"Quarters."
"Jace, there's nothing there."
"Trust me, there is. Watch this."
He walked confidently forward, until he reached a spot about 10 feet from where he had been before. He reached out, cupping his hand with his palm facing the ground, and began to slowly rotate it until his hand-still in the same position- was facing the sky.
I looked up in front of me and nearly choked on my own saliva.
"What the..."
