Barron had to have seen Alvarr's horn, but he hadn't said a word. He'd acted quite unlike himself and treated the mage with respect. That made Alvarr more uneasy. At least with insults and taunts, Alvarr knew where he stood.
Everything's changing, and I have no idea what to do.
The mage wandered farther into the protective cover of the forest. Alvarr didn't consciously decide where to go, but he was drawn to the faint sounds of his people in the field beyond the woods. They were mating, and he admitted he was curious.
Had Mare-Mother lied about his age? Was Alvarr still not fully mature, and that was why he didn't act like the other stallions? Was she so desperate to get rid of him that she sent him to cross over too early? No. If anything, she wanted the stallions to have a mage. It was as though she knew they were struggling.
He shook his head, still getting used to the weight of the horn. Now was the perfect time to be on four legs, when everyone else was occupied.
And now was the only time he'd get close to a mare; perhaps he'd feel the urge if he got close enough. I won't let myself be seen. He'd just get close enough to learn more.
Alvarr picked his way as quietly as he could through the trees. Only a few trees' depth separated him from the Breeding Field. The sounds of stallions and mares got louder. Alvarr heard heavy sighs, grunts, and triumphant neighs and whinnies. It stirred something in him, but it was more like fear, and his organ did not extend like the others' did.
The people are not themselves. A shiver made its way all over his coat, his every muscle twitching, and he pranced a few steps to get rid of the feeling. His people were under the spell of the Time of Mating, and he had to admit that it made him uneasy. Maybe I should be relieved that it won't happen to me.
He took a few steps more into the forest, wondering how close he should get, but he was stopped by the crack of heavy hooves on fallen sticks. The shadowy shapes of a mare chased by a stallion plunged into the forest, only a small distance ahead of him.
But the mare stopped running and stood still, vibrating with excitement. Her tail lifted to the side. The stallion approached her from behind, gave a great leap, and put his heavy weight on her back. His long, heavy organ rubbed against her side, and the mare made a noise of impatience.
Jutting his hips with a few quick movements, the stallion jabbed his hips until he could found his way. His organ disappeared, impossibly long, into the mare's body.
Under him, the mare moaned and moved her front hooves. Whether it was impatience or the desire to get away, Alvarr didn't know. They seemed beyond words. The stallion jerked his hips back and forth in response in short quick movements. "Uh, uh, uh," he grunted, at the mercy of nature's drive.
His rear legs worked his thick rod faster and faster. The mare started panting, but still made no move to get away. The stallion drove himself in with a mighty push and stayed buried inside. Shuddering, he made a loud, long guttural sound.
Alvarr realized what was happening. He's filling her with his seed! That strange warmth stole over his underside, even in four-legged form.
After a long moment, the stallion pulled his organ out and dismounted, still dripping. Alvarr expected them to run away, but then, they both transformed into their two-legged forms. He did not recognize the man, but he could see that both were smiling. The man put his hands on the woman's shoulders, stroking the skin with his thumbs. "Do you think it took?"
The woman tossed her long hair. "I think so," she said, putting a hand over her belly. "Perhaps we should try again, just to be sure." She walked into the man's arms and brought her body fully against his own. Their lips touched and slid together.
Alvarr's heart was full of a strange emotion. This has nothing to do with mating. But the two were clearly good friends. How can that be, though, when the Time of Mating only comes once a year?
"Larea," the man said, "how is Kadas? Is he growing up strong and healthy?"
"Oh, yes," Larea said. "It's only a few years before..." She cleared her throat. "Before he'll become a proud stallion to live with your people."
The man pulled her close. "I will see to it that you get a visit. Somehow."
"Let's use the time we have wisely," Larea said, pulling the man down to the soft forest floor. She reached for the man's human organ, which was already starting to grow, and slid her hand up and down the shaft. "I want another foal this season."
We can mate in two-legged form? Alvarr supposed that it was possible. He backed away as silently as he could, but not before he could hear the mare-woman's clear cries of pleasure ringing through the trees.
His head was full of what he'd just learned. If stallions and mares used to live together... Larea and that stallion I don't know have mated before... Larea would lose her foal, Kadas... I just don't know.
