Subject Selection Form

It was early in the morning when the Super Six woke up next day. Fang was skimming through the television's channels, eating cereal at the same time, while Gopal was still sleeping in,  Astor was out walking around the front garden, Boboiboy sketching something in his notebook in the dining room, while the girls were all locked up in Ying's room for reasons unknown. But maybe there was a reason: school was starting tomorrow.

Fang, even though watching his favourite show, was watching with some sort of pressure that suggested he was procrastinating. Astor had just came in from the garden. He looked around, quite confused at the still tensely silent house. Usually at this hour, literally everyone would be out at the living room.

Unnoticed by Fang, who was still watching his show brow-furrowed, he slipped into the dining room. On his way there, he rather thought he heard noises of catastrophe coming from Ying's room. He wondered why, but decided not to disturb them at the time being. Girls can react in many unexpected ways, sometimes.

He saw his younger brother, Boboiboy, sketching a picture of a dragon. It looked very much like his own earth dragon.

"Morning." Astor told him, dropping into a vacant seat beside him.

Boboiboy nodded, but did not look up. He also had the tense look of Fang's, but at least he still had his productivity to draw something.

"What's up with you all today?" Astor asked curiously, getting up from his seat again to make coffee at the counter, with his back to Boboiboy.

"School's tomorrow," Boboiboy said grumpily.

Astor, who now had his mug of hot steaming coffee reading, went back to the table and sipped on it.

"So?" he asked.

Boboiboy looked affronted as he stared at him.

"We have to submit our subject selection form!"

"Ah..."

To ease the awkwardness, he raised his mug to sip on it again. When he had placed it down, Boboiboy had went back to drawing.

"Is that what the girls are doing in Ying's?"

Boboiboy nodded curtly one more time. And Astor felt like he should not disturb him at the moment. When he was walking back, the door to Gopal's opened and Gopal himself trudged out sleepily.

"Morning." he yawned, once he spotted Astor.

"Yo."

Astor was about to move past him, but Gopal called him back.

"Hey, Astor, can you help me later with something?"

"Uh..." Astor said, pretty sure that the something was his subject selection. "Of course."

"Thanks," he mumbled, before going to the bathroom.

The mood of the house did not improve as afternoon came in. Instead, Astor thought it was getting more catastrophic. But he wasn't a student like them. In his case, he felt like the only cheerful person in a mournful funeral.

Since Fang had left to do his homework, Astor had taken over of the television. He was watching a movie, however, when Lia dropped onto the sofa beside him.

"Do you think this is good?" she asked, shoving a form unceremoniously under his nose.

The movie was in a rather action-packed scene, and only grudgingly did he down.

There was the form Boboiboy, Fang, Ying, Yaya, Gopal and Lia were extremely worried about. There were three rows of boxes here. The first with two columns, for your science subjects. The second one with four columns and multiple choices of subjects. The last one to tick if Lia isn't a Thornisian. Lia had taken in to take Biology, Chemistry, Art, Physical Education, ICT and Geography. And since she isn't a Thornisian, she had ticked Global Perspectives at the last column of the form.

"How is it?" she asked nervously, when she saw that Astor had finished consulting her form.

"Yeah. It's OK." he said, passing the paper back to her.

He looked up to see that he had missed the action part. He rather thought the other's tension of the subject selection might be starting to get on his nerves.

"Hey, do you think it's preferable to choose ADD Maths or Geography?" she asked, looking down at her list.

"Depends on your ambition," Astor growled silently.

"Hm...I think Geography, then. Thanks," she said, patting his back.

It was a relief when she got up to leave, but not when the next moment five other people wanted their opinion on their form too.

"It's all OK, alright? Why're you all so stressed out about this, anyways?" he said so angrily that he shut down the television.

"Oh!" Ying suddenly said, then she dashed away with her form into her bedroom, slamming the door behind her.

Yaya raised her eyebrows, perplexed, but then returned her attention to Astor as it was her turn.

"What do you want to be," Astor repeated lazily.

"A vet. Or a charity organiser. Anything that can help the world." she said helplessly to Astor.

"Better to take Business and Global Perspective. And maybe Biology and Chemistry. Take Geography and History just in case too."

"Thanks Astor!" she said happily, and went away.

Next was Fang, who had his earplugs in and handed over his form casually. Before Astor could ask, he had said, "Musician."

Astor looked through his form. It was well-written, and not even a single sign of correction tape or fluid used. He seemed to have thought out what he wanted properly.

"Looks good to me. Just don't drop Music."

Fang taken his form back without much emotion and strolled away. Next was Gopal, who seemed like a nervous wreck when he handed Astor his form. His hand was even shaking as he did so.

"Why did you choose ADD Maths?" Astor asked incredulously. Gopal, as far as he heard of, never had been really good at usual maths at all.

"M-my dad," he said, gulping, as though Astor might hit him too if he spoke more against the matter.

Astor shook his head as he continued. At least he chose Combined Science instead of all pure sciences: he was sure Gopal couldn't handle the pressure of all of them combined. But then he too also chose Global Perspective.

"Uh, Gopal," he said kindly. "I don't think you should go for Global Perspective. It's a lot of research work, and if you're taking ADD Maths, you might not want to choose that."

He looked on the verge of fainting as he stumbled away. Lastly, was Boboiboy.

"And what's up with you?" Astor asked, surprised.

"Just want your approval," Boboiboy shrugged.

Astor shook his head, handing the paper straight away back to him without even consulting it.

"It doesn't really matter, actually, what you choose. You six will become the protector of Earth, what do all these subjects mean to you if your job will be the most unique of all?"

Boboiboy seemed to have an argument for that, but felt better not to talk back now. So he took his paper back as he settled beside Astor, looking tired, but alert.

"What did you choose when you were fourteen?" he asked, as Astor switched on the television again.

"I was a space rebel for ten years. Don't forget," he smirked.

Boboiboy sat up, shock written all over his face. The idea of his elder brother skipping this crucial and stressful moment of his life is simply just unfair.

"No fair," he said, crossing his arms and going into a grumpy silence.

"Life's never fair."
