The fog was thick. Thick and smooth like glue or treacle. It slipped down streets and alleys and stuck to everything. Every building and every object was shrouded with a wall-like layer of opaque fog. Westerham was known for its fog, as it was located next to one of the biggest lakes in the Canadian rockies: Lake Superior. I used to love sitting above the water on the minuscule pier-like structure, dangling my feet into the pitch black water below and watching as the ripples grew larger until they dissipated and reformed to the smooth waves and ripples of the lake. And if the fog awoke as you were sitting there, it would rise up from the water and cling to your body desperately, as if it was trying to drag itself from out of the water. As soon as you moved, the fog would evaporate and fall back into the lake. It reminded me of a person... a dark and desperate creature that was stuck in the deep depths of the water.
I now watched as the fog turned every corner and climbed over every house, filling the streets and covering every window.
That's when I heard the rain. The sound of the rain slapping my roof was threatening and nimble, as if every drop was purposefully and perfectly placed. The constant and regular rapping of the rain and the booming wail of the thunder reminded me of an orchestra with a variety of drums and cymbals that all crashed and beat themselves in a dramatic expression of anger. As if the sky was crying...
Then a deafening explosion of white sound erupted from my back yard, ripping through the walls of my house; As if the sky had fallen into my garden. I lifted my head from my notebook, placed my stubby pencil on the coffee table, and stood up. Hesitantly, I de-creased my trousers and took one step towards the back door. I had decided to enter the fog...
