Why...

I grip the frozen door-handle, the contours of the hard brass digging itself into my hand. My entire arm went red and spotted with ghostly white dots, as if my veins were freezing up. Cautiously, I twist the handle, slowly and carefully, trying not to make any noise. I could still hear the rapid firing of the rain above my house, so with my left hand, I snatch my fisherman jacket from the old chair that lies wearily by the door to my garden. The door creeps open slightly, and the deathly cold breeze that swims through the crack sends a shiver up my spine. All my hairs stand to attention... I can barely see two metres in front of me; the dark and chilling fog twists and turns as if it was a rabbit caught in a trap. Small raindrops fall through the fog, breaking up the mist and sending the air in opposite directions. Just like the ripples of Lake Superior, the fog dissipates into other clouds of curling mist. I shudder. Cracks of thunder and lightning ring out above the town and I listen tentatively to the seconds between each boom. Then, I see a shimmer in the midst of the fog. The air separated, but quickly recovered itself with dark mist: as if it was hiding something.
"Hello?" I whispered into the empty air.
"Are you lost?"
More agitation in the fog. I take a long step forward, deeper into my garden. I feel the bumps of the cobbled path underneath my feet and I know where I'm standing. I felt safer and more secure. The rain pounds my skull and I feel a headache arising from the temples of my head.
I shout out into the abyss once again, not expecting any form of reaction or answer from the fog.
"Hello! I have to leave now but..."
"Why?" A soft whisper slips through the air and into my un-expecting ear.
