Blaise wasn't right. The winter had come too fast. Draco hadn't invited anyone. Pansy announced a week ago she had a partener, as well as Blaise. Maybe all the girls had someone. He couldn't believe this was happening to him.
Draco took another look at himself in the mirror. He wore robes, like the ones he had for the Yule Ball. But he didn't look like he wanted to. Draco wasn't smiling and he didn't have that look of confidence he had seen on his father's face.
Blaise came next to him from the dormitory. 'What happened?'
'Nothing,' Draco replied.
'Don't worry, you look alright. And you don't need a girl to have fun.'
Blaise knew Draco didn't invite and hadn't been invited. He and Pansy heard the first.
'You know, Muggles have this stupid tradition about a kiss at midnight,' Blaise continued. 'Who knows, maybe someone wants to kiss you tonight.'
'I don't think so, but thank you, Blaise.'
Blaise patted his shoulder, then put on his mask – a silver one – and left. Draco checked his costume one more time, then put on the black mask he had bought and left the Common Room.
The atmosphere was exactly like four years ago: there were some tables near the walls, but the students didn't pay attention to them. They all danced and laughed, enjoying the song. Draco smiled and advanced, a part of him trying to spot other Slytherins.
Not a success. Everyone wore a mask and a few chose their house's colours. He saw Blaise with a girl that looked like Pansy, dressed in a green dress with a silver mask like his. Draco wondered if he could find someone with a black mask.
He shrugged, then melted into the crowd.
