Chapter 8
I woke up from the blinding sun coming through my window.
It was Saturday and I remembered that it was Luke's pool/beach party today.
Luke must be lucky because it was late January but the weather was feeling hot today.
I went downstairs to get some breakfast even if it was already ten in the morning.
I saw Danny in the living room playing with his cars but I didn't see mom around.
"Where's mom?" I call out to Danny from the kitchen.
I opened the refrigerator and took out a carton of milk and a box of Teddy Grahams. I sat down on the breakfast table and ate away.
"She went out to do the groceries!" Danny calls back from the living room.
A few minutes later, Danny comes galloping inside the kitchen. He takes a few pieces of Teddy Grahams from the box.
"Wanna play Wii with me today?" He asks me.
"I can't." I say and his face falls into a sad face. "I'm sorry."
"Why can't you?" He asks.
"I'm hanging out with friends today." I tell him.
"You're always hanging out with your friends!" He whines. "You never play with me anymore."
"I know. I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you soon, I promise."
"Promise?" He holds out his pinky to me.
"Promise." I wrap my pinky to his signifying a pinky promise.
"Pinky promises should never be broken!" He reminds me and walks out of the kitchen humming the Pokemon theme song to himself.
I smile at this.
The little boy never failed to make me smile, I thought to myself. It was such a shame I had to turn down his offer today.
* * *
It was already ten minutes after three in the afternoon which meant I was ten minutes late.
I had followed the address that Dalton gave me and ended up becoming lost in another neighborhood. I wasn't exactly familiar with Santa Barbara yet. But once I pulled in front of a mansion (that was definitely just by the beach), I parked the car and knocked at the front door.
"Hey!" Luke greeted me as he opened the door. "Come on in. You're the last one."
I smile at him and step inside. The place was huge. That was all I could say.
"Everyone's out at the back already. C'mon." He leads me to a sliding glass door where I saw a big balcony with an infinity pool that overlooked the ocean.
"Woah." I complimented from behind him.
"I know." He chuckles and we step outside.
There were only a few people, which meant it really was a party just for 'important people' as Tara would say. I didn't really see how we were important people seeing as this was just some small party.
