(unedited chapter)
I stared blankly at the guy who was laying across the old quilt, a smirk on his face. His green eyes roamed one time over me before he jumped up, striding over to me.
"What are you doing in my room?" I asked, fear laced through my voice. I stepped back, crossing my arms over my stomach feeling uncomfortable in his presence with just my swimsuit on.
"Your house?" He let out a loud laugh as he clutched his stomach, bending over before inhaling loudly. "This isn't your house anymore. You're dead!" He shouted, before releasing another laugh.
"Dead? What the hell do you mean I'm dead?" I questioned my face twisting in a sense of confusion. I shivered as he placed his hands tightly on my shoulders, dragging me towards the mirror.
"Look at yourself, and tell me if you look alive." He ordered, holding me tightly in front of the mirror. I glanced into the mirror, inhaling a large breath as I saw a corpse looking back at me. My skin was a pasty white, water droplets standing out against the skin. My hair was dripping wet, the majority of it tangled up some chunks of it missing. My eyes were the worst. I stepped closer to the reflection, my breathing becoming heavier. My eyes were a milky white, just like Cleo's and Haley's, except mine moved.
"Why are my eyes swirling?" I questioned attempting to get away from the mirror. His hold was tight, holding me in the position.
"It's hard to explain. I've never seen anyone with swirling ones before." The guy replied, finally letting go of me. I took one last glance of my appearance before turning around.
"So what, I'm stuck here now? What about heaven? And why the heck is it winter?" I asked, continuing to fire questions at his face. He laughed as he sat against the edge of the bed, looking up at me.
"You're not stuck here forever. Just until you figure out what happened to you. Your memories—they won't be any help. All you can remember is what happened before you dove under, correct?" He asked placing his chin onto the palm of his hand. I blinked slowly at him before nodding. He was right. I couldn't remember anything that had happened before my lungs nearly collapsed under the water.
"Wait a second. What year is it?" I questioned, leaning against the cool wall.
"The same year it was yesterday. " He chuckled back. I stared at him with daggers before realization dawned on me. I froze for a second before stepping closer.
"You're the guy that was talking to Cleo yesterday! What did you do to her?!" I screamed, reaching for his throat. He barely flinched as his hands latched onto my wrists, shoving me back so that I was slamming into the wall.
"You may be dead, but you can still feel pain. You didn't even let me finish my explanation yet." He growled, shoving himself away from the wall. I groaned in pain, my spine cracking as I stood up straight once more meeting my eyes with his. His green orbs seemed to be on fire before they calmed down to their usual tint.
"When you're ready not to be a complete jerk, let me know and I'll appear." He said with a tiny smirk before he vanished into thin air.
I watched him go with a scowl, before crossing the room slowly, throwing myself onto the squeaky mattress. I blinked a couple times, unable to warm up. The cold had literally seeped into my bones.
I was kinda lonely now. The only sound in the empty room was the tiny snowflakes that were hitting the window. I sat up suddenly, noticing something for the first time. How could I hear the snow hitting the window? How could I see farther than normal?
"Ok,you can come back now! I'm done being a jerk!" I yelled, questions suddenly popping through my brain.
"Oh, good." The guy answered, appearing behind me. I whirled around , ready to yell at him for sneaking up behind me.
"I have some questions." I blatantly stated, crossing my arms. I watched his face as he gave me a crooked smile before placing himself on the edge of the bed.
"Ask away." He replied propping himself up with his elbows.
"First of all, what's up with my hearing and sight?" I asked cocking my head to the right. I shivered slightly as the snow continued to hit the window. The sound of it creeped me out for some reason.
"Well, that's kind of hard to explain. I was the rookie of this stuff before you came along, but I have the same thing. When you die, it's as if your senses er..restart? If that makes sense." He responded, resting his head onto his hand, seeming to be lost in thought.
"Why are my eyes like this and yours are a normal color?" I asked continuing to fire questions at him.
"I don't know, I'll find out for you if that's even possible." He responded, almost as quickly as I had asked him. I made a scratchy whimper sound in my throat, tears threatening to spill down my cold cheeks.
"Will I ever be able to live again?" I croaked out watching his face turn pained.
"Nope. You're part of the undead now. Welcome to the party!" He howled, before giving me another laugh.
I crashed to the floor in tears, my body shaking with violent sobs. I didn't want to be dead, not at all. This sucked, big time. I missed my dad and my mom, and I just wanted to go home.
"Don't cry, please. It's really not that bad Emma." He mumbled patting my shoulder. His skin was ice cold and I jumped back out of his reach.
"It's freezing, don't touch me!" I screamed, my lungs burning from the effort. He held his hands up in defense before climbing to his feet checking the watch on his wrist.
"Well, we're a bit late to your meeting with the undead court. They're not going to be too pleased." He grumbled throwing his head back to look at the ceiling.
"Meeting?" I sniffled, climbing to my feet shakily. I watched in confusion as he stretched his hand out, giving me a tiny wink.
"Do you trust me?" He asked wiggling his hand.
There was nothing else I could do, so I grabbed his icy hand and waited for what would happen next.
