Silence.
That's all I heard as I continued to swim down, the weight of the water pressing down on me, the water temperature cooling down as I swam farther into the depth. I stopped, my lungs burning desperately before I finally managed to start swimming back to the surface. The water never started turning warm as I came closer and closer to the surface. This was a bad idea. I shouldn't have done this. My lungs gave way, and I breathed in a mouthful of lake water, my muscles starting to tire from the cold water. My head hit the surface and I braced myself against the cold wind, coughing until the water finally came free from my lungs.
I opened my eyes, ready to accept my defeat, but what I saw instead nearly made me drown.
Snow.
Ice.
That's all there was as I swam from the hole in the ice and to the solid feel of the thicker ice. I yanked myself out of the water, my fingernails scratching against the ice helplessly, one of them beginning to bleed.
"Cleo? Haley?" I called out, walking slowly across the ice, the silence roaring in my ears. A few feet away, I saw Cleo's hair laying on the ice.
"Oh Cleo, thank god!" I yelled to her, running across the thick ice to her still body. I examined her, my eyes roaming across her face, a cold realization flowing through my body. I opened my mouth, planning on releasing a scream but nothing came out. Her usual green eyes were a milky white, her mouth open in a grim shock. Her skin was cold to the touch, her hair frozen from the water. I helplessly ran my finger across her face, a sob racking my body as I stood up, turning away from her dead body.
"Oh god, where are you Haley?" I screamed, my throat still burning from the lake water. I scraped my feet across the ice, my body becoming numb from the cold. What the hell happened? I scanned the frozen scenery, spotting another lump of a body. I slowly made my way over, finding the exact same thing as I did for Cleo. I dropped to my knees in shock, the cold of the ice seeping into my bones. I needed to call the police, but which way should I walk?
I stood on shaky knees, turning in a circle my eyes landing on the ancient lake house. "Mom? Dad!?" I called out, shuffling across the ice. My voice was hoarse, the only sound in the silent world the shuffling of my feet on the ice. "Mommy?" I cried, taking a step onto the cold snowy ground, my eyes trained on the house in front of me. I reached the front porch, the feeling in my body numb from the cold. With effort, I yanked myself onto the steps putting one foot in front of another slowly. Taking a couple more steps, I reached the front door wrapping my pale hands around the doorknob.
"Mom, help me please!" I shivered twisting the doorknob, ready to burst into the doorway. Instead of the door crashing open, it remained still leaving me standing in confusion. "Who locked the door?" I wailed slamming into the door with the little strength I had left. I pounded my fist against the door, sinking to my knees slowly. I tilted my head back, wrapping my arms around my stomach trying to gain warmth from the tiny swimsuit I had on. I watched as snow began to fall over the quiet world, the flurries quickly covering the ground.
I began to shiver, and in one last attempt I stood up, looking at the front door. I racked my brain trying to think of a way in when I remembered that the window in the back never would lock. I clutched the railing of the stairs for support as I climbed down, shivering as my feet sank into the snow. My hand trailing across the edge, I slowly made my way to the back, staring up at the window that might possibly let me in.
I reached my numb fingers to the side, pushing up with the little strength I had, nearly crying in joy when the window sprang open. "Oh thank god." I whispered to the sky before climbing in through the window, slamming it closed when I pulled myself through.
"H-hello? Can s-someone please h-help?" I called out, shivering in the silence. I walked from the kitchen and into the living room, looking around in disgust as I took in the sight. Everything looked as if it had been thrown around, and during that time trash was thrown everywhere. Shaking off the mess, I climbed the squeaky stairs,my feet barley making a sound as I crossed the wood. I stepped towards my parents bedroom, my knees shaking from the effort of just climbing the stairs. I just wanted to lay down and wake up from this nightmare, and forget this had ever happened.
I turned the knob to their room, allowing the door to swing open my eyes taking in the swirling dust in the room. It looks like everyone had dropped everything, packed, and left.
"Mom? Dad?" I whispered, my voice hoarse from the cold. I crept towards the large bed, continuing to shiver as I yanked myself onto the mattress, piling the blankets up and over my body. I stared at the ceiling, my mind racing wildly as I tried to wrap what was happening around my head. Was I dead? I still had a pulse in my wrist,so that wasn't the answer. Why were Cleo and Haley dead.?Oh god. They were dead.
I sat up quickly, jumping from the bed. I needed to find a phone, or go into the town. I needed to find someone to help me. "Someone help!" I screamed running from the room, slamming the door into the wall. I ran down the hall towards my bedroom, hoping that the bag I just had yesterday was still sitting on the floor, the contents spilled everywhere.
I opened the door, my heart leaping into my throat as I saw the emptiness. Except for one thing.
"Hey cupcake, fancy meeting you here."
