I kept watching the scene play out. The man kept pushing the gun harder into Ashley's head but she wouldn't budge. That same expression was still on her face. I knew I had to do something. Yet there wasn't much I could do. If I killed the man, she might know that I'm here and watching. And she is my target so I can't just let him kill her when it was my job. Damn. I grabbed my rifle and jumped off of the roof and into the alleyway, far away from Ashley and the criminal so they didn't see me. I reached into one of the pouches on my belt and pulled out a chain. I swung it and snaked it around the criminal's ankle, making him fall to the ground, face first. I pulled him to me and, before he could turn around, grabbed the small knife in my boot and stabbed him in the back of his head. I looked at Ashley who still had that same expression. She was just standing there. I didn't know what to do in this situation. I was about to reach for my rifle when she suddenly spoke.
Ashley:Whose there?
Her voice. It was so soft. And she didn't sound scared. She asked as like she was in a normal conversation. I felt something in my heart. Why? What was it? It wasn't like the night when my family died. No. It was the opposite. I sighed. She knew I was here. I stepped out of the shadows and stopped when I was in view. Ashley looked at me. We stood there for I don't know how long. I looked at her forehead and a small streak of blood had formed from the spot where the man held the gun. I walked closer to her and she didn't move. Not even when I was right in front of her. I pulled out a napkin since I carried a few to wipe off any blood or sweat I got on me. I held it to her forehead and she flinched.
Me:Sorry. Did that hurt?
Ashley:A little. Who are you?
Me:No one.
Ashley:Yet you're standing right there.
Me:Huh?
Ashley:How can you be no one when you're clearly standing right there? If you're alive then you must be someone. So who are you?
Me:... Seth.
Ashley:Are you the one who saved me?
Me:Yes.
Ashley:Then thank you.
I didn't believe it. She just thanked me. For saving her. If only she knew why I was there then she wouldn't be thanking me. When I finally got the bleeding to stop, I pulled out a band aid from a small pouch on my belt. I put in on her forehead and began to walk away when she grabbed my arm.
Ashley:Wait. Can you come over? I want to thank you somehow. Like maybe something to eat.
Me:No. I must be going.
Ashley:Will I ever see you again?
Me:I don't know. Bye.
I then walked back to get my rifle and I left. She wasn't going to see me again. I knew that for a fact. I was going to have to try and kill her again. From a distance. Which meant that she couldn't see me. When I arrived at Gridlock, Harry was waiting for me. He didn't look happy.
Harry:I heard you didn't complete your mission. Why is that?
Me:There were some complications. It won't happen again.
Harry:It better not. Remember who saved you from the streets. Remember who you work for and what your mission is. Now go get some rest for tomorrow. Then you'll finish it.
Me:Very well.
I got into the elevator and pushed the button to my room. I pulled out the picture I was given and examined it again. The thing I couldn't seem to forget about her was those eyes. There was a certain power to them. Meeting her tonight was also very interesting. Even how she sounded and reacted to everything. She wasn't scared. She spoke like a regular person. Her heart rate didn't change. I could tell everything about her just from a glance. I knew what I wanted. I had to see her again. But when I do, what will happen? I know it was my job to kill her but for some reason I don't want to. I had never felt like this before. What is it? This feeling?
