Shawn was sleep, dreaming of nothing. Not even a sound of hope. All he did was sleep. In his mind thinking of his wife and son. Then all of a sudden he jerked forward. He woke up , lifting up from his pillow.
"Damnit, shit." He heard the bus driver say. Shawn stood up and went up front.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"There's something wrong with the bus, stay on the bus, don't get off..." The man began to get his tool box.
"Why?" Shawn asked.
"This is the south, Mississippi, the place that still withholds hate in the south, stay here." The bus driver said. Now the man is white and he has family down in Mississippi. He doesn't have anything against black people, ever since he was growing up. He never did hate black folks.
Shawn looked at everyone else. They were worried because the majority of people on the bus were black. Some were Latino. Then they're were 6 or 7 white people on. Shawn looked scared as hell.
It was like an hour until the man came back. Shawn was about to doze off again. Until some white folks hopped on the bus. They had bandannas around their necks and then overalls on and boots. They also had bats and knifes too. Shawn instantly woke up.
"What the hell up niggers!" One yelled. Shawn didn't look down, but he saw all the other black folks with there's down. He did so too. Yet he also got a little threatened by the word. "Oh so y'all can't talk?!" He hit the window and broke the glass, almost hitting Shawn's head. Jay just went to praying.
"Speak up you lousy mutha fuckers!" Another yelled and pulled out his knife.
"That's it enough!" The bus driver came back with a friend, who was indeed black.
"Oh thanks help us with these-..." One of the men took a long pause and looked at the black man standing behind him"...What the hell is this?!" He asked pointing, using his bat.
"You better get your ass off my bus..." He grabbed a rifle from the black man"...Or I'll blow your brains out." He said, sternly.
All 4 of them looked at each other and began to get off. They mugged the bus driver as they mumbled stuff underneath their breaths.
"I got your tomb stone old man." The one with the bat said. The bus driver, sighed and then looked around.
"Y'all alright?" He asked.
"Uh yeah, you need a hand with the bus?" Shawn offered.
"Uh sure, Jonny do you think you can fix these folks some food?"
"Yeah, sure Adam." He raced off the bus.
"Hurry Jo!" He yelled to him as he hopped off. "What's your name?" He asked Shawn.
"Shawn."
"Alright Shawn, help me with this bus." They hopped off and began to get to work. Shawn had to take off his buttoned up shirt, leaving him in his T-shirt. He knew his body wasn't the best but he didn't care.
"What's up with the south man?" Shawn asked, trying to make conversation.
"You wanna know what's a better question?" Adam asked.
"Sure..." Shawn slurred his words a bit.
"What's up with Mississippi? Have you ever heard of Emit Till? Oh and can you hand me the ranch?" He asked a bunch of questions in one sentence.
Shawn grabbed the ranch." Yeah he was the boy that got killed right?" Shawn asked.
"Worst then how you put it, murdered. Taken out in the night, from his great uncle's house, out of his bed by 2 white men, they cut his tongue out, shot him in the eye, beat him...just tortured him for days, then once he was dead, they put some type of metal around his neck, and then threw him under water, he didn't stay down for long though." Adam explained," All of that torture, just because he supposedly, whistled at a white woman." The man shook his head.
