"How far is it?"
"Quite your whining," Alison called back to the purple haired girl. "We're almost there."
The next morning they set out to the Red Castle. This was it. There was no more distractions, no more chances to stall, they'd be meeting the Red Queen and her right hand man, Cheney Cat, today. Harry would have to face Artemis Hatter once more, today.
That thought had him in a fog. Trailing behind the others as Alison and William led the way. Mal and Ben were just behind the two, talking about something Harry didn't care enough to try and hear.
What would he even say to her? He couldn't even begin to form imaginary scenes in his head, trying to plan it all out. He kept coming up blank. Things were so much easier when all he had to worry about was avoiding the blunt end of Uma's wrath. Now, the weight of Wonderland rested on his shoulders. He was beginning to understand why Artemis used to hold such dismay to being the future ruler of this Kingdom. He would gladly admit that he wouldn't want to, and wouldn't be able to do it.
"She used to go on voyages with our Mom," Harry was startled out of his own mind, looking over at the tall Hatter. He hadn't noticed Matt was walking beside him until he spoke up. The pirate frowned, a silent question resting against his lips. "When she was younger; she used to sail with our mom on our grandfathers ship. The Wonder."
His dark eyebrows furrowed, "She never told me that," he admitted.
Matt shrugged, "because on her 12th year they began to prepare her for her royal duties. All her dreams of adventures pushed aside. No more pirate nonsense."
Harry frowned at that. He always assumed that being the child of the hero from all the stories meant that your life was just perfect. You had everything. He couldn't even being to imagine it being any similar to things on the Isle. But, it was, in the sense they were all pressured in some way. And it was Artemis who gave him proof of that.
"It didn't help that she soon met you," Matt pointed out.
Harry felt his lips twitch into his all too familiar smirk at that, "pirates curse, I guess." There was a dangerous glint in his eyes that made Matt roll his own.
A startled gasp caught their attention, and both boys looked up to see Alison crouching beside a red spot. Harry's initial thought was that someone was hurt, but then he heard the synchronized singing of three men.
"We're painting the Roses red," He shared a curious look with Matt, following the others into a smaller section of the maze. There, were three Jack of Heart's, painting a bundle of white Roses with red paint.
Though they were all flabbergasted by what they stumbled upon, it was Mal who stepped forward. "Um, hey. Hi!" She smiled brightly when they stopped their melody to look at the new arrivals. "Why are you painting the Roses red?"
