I began to doze off, the sounds of chattering and laughter faded into the darkness. When I open my eyes, the students are gone and the room is dark. Great, they left me. A series of cracking, screams from my knees, as I stand from my desk. The lights flicker in the hallway and the silence grows loud. I step into the room 911, psychology. A person is crouched in the corner, groaning. "Are you okay?" I ask, stepping closer to see them. The girl's head shoots up, her eyes were a dead grey, and her skin was a pale beige. Stopping in place, my heart begins to pound and my breathing runs off course, everything shakes rapidly in my body. Alarms ring in my head. "Run." They seemed to say. I dash for the door, the girl suddenly trudging behind. She jumps on me and digs her teeth into my neck. The pain was enough to knock out an elephant, so I decided to take a nap.
Upon waking up, I find myself strapped to a table and multiple needles in my arms. "She is conscious!" A man yells, leaning back, past the door. The sound of combat boots echoes through the over lit hall. A woman, average height, hazel skin, green and blue flecked eyes, and her somewhat soft voice blends it all together.
"Please, remain calm." She smiles, it's warm, welcoming. "My name is Kate. Yours might be?" I glance from her to the man in the lab coat, pulling out needles and putting more in. Kate waves her hand and the man leaves. After he's completely out of the door, I raise my head from the stiff pillow and stare at her for a while.
Finally I say, "Kaliah, and I don't like this...thing." I tugged at the largest wire, running from my arm to a bucket. It was draining me, taking my blood. "What's it's purpose?" I ask, looking back up at her.
"Your antibodies." She steps closer, swiftly, her footing was on point. I could see now that she was armed, to the teeth. "To put it simply, you may be our only hope." Her pearly whites gleamed as she crouched to my side. "We need your-" Sirens blazed through the hallway. Screams came from all directions. Kate lifts her walkie from her chest and speaks into it. "What's the problem?" First static, then a man on the other line speaks, his voice panicked.
"The Brutes got out, this place isn't safe anymore. We need to evacuate." It clicked off and Kate glanced at me before responding.
"Be sure to get everyone you can out, block the Brutes off and collect everything you can on your way."
"Sure thing boss," The man barked a couple of commands. "Doc is getting everything she can, I'm going to-" The man cut off his sentence with the sound of static.
"Going to what, Grey? Grey! Damn it!" Kate threw an empty beaker at the wall. She starts to rapidly pull the wires from me. It was like Christmas, but I was the present. The unfortunately gifted toy that had a special type of magic.
"What did you mean 'antibodies,' and what are Brutes?" I ask while she bandaged up my arm.
"Zombies." The only word that came out of her mouth, before she grabbed the bag of stuff she filled, and ran toward the door. "Follow me, keep close, and don't die." She says, tossing a bag on my back.
