We’d trained for three long years, and today was the day we’d finally choose our regiment and become full-fledged soldiers. I already new I wanted to join the Scout Regiment, just like my father had before an injury put him out of commission. I smiled for the first time in a while, relaxing for a moment as my friends and I set up cannons along the wall. They were all talking about what regiment they’d join, and I was surprised to hear many of them wanted to join the Scout Regiment as well, even though most of the group I was with were of the top ten.
I got up and gave a small smile to Eren as he stood, taking a break for a few moments, watching the town below us. He looked completely happy, and I shared his feelings in a way. Today I felt as though nothing could go wrong, and some portion of my brain whispered to me that things would actually end well for us, and for humankind.
Suddenly, a loud flash of lightning shot from the sky, and my eyes widened as a titan appeared before us. Not just any titan either, the colossal titan. We were all thrown from the top of the wall as it destroyed the cannons. Fala jumped onto my back as I attached my cord to the wall. Eren was the first to spring into action; he scaled the wall and began attacking the Titan. I joined him, trying my best to distract the creature, but nothing we did seemed to work; after making a hole in the wall the thing disappeared. I grunted in anger and went back into the city. In the distance, the footsteps of titans could be heard.
Garrison Regiment soldiers began scaling the walls and giving orders, Mikasa and I (and Fala) were assigned to the elite group that was closer to the evacuating people.
I traveled down the wall and killed one of the first Titans to enter before heading towards the center of the city, to the people. From the distance I was at, I could see many titans pouring into the city. Buildings began to get smashed, and echoes of screams filled the area. I swooped down the street and picked up a man who would’ve been crushed by a falling rock, Fala’s harness cord extended as she picked up the man’s daughter in her teeth. I continued down the street with them, until I felt they were safe enough to run the rest of the way out of the city. The man thanked me profusely, and the little girl stared up at me with large eyes and pet Fala with a giggle.
I then continued my way down the streets, searching for civilians in need, and once in a while assisting soldiers with Titans. I don’t know how long it’d been, but there were barely any civilians left, and more and more titans. I made my way to the gates where the evacuation commenced and saw a large cart blocking a crowd of people’s way. Before I reached the gate, a titan came barreling down the street. Mikasa came into view, and I decided to help her make the kill. I swooped down by the monster’s feet and cut one of its Achilles tendons, while Fala cut the other, as it fell Mikasa swiftly dug her blades into the nape of its neck, killing it. We landed on the ground at the same time, next to each other.
Mikasa blinked in confusion and questioned the people. We proceeded forward, advancing on the fat merchant and his cronies. Fala walked next to me, her fur beginning to bristle. A few tried to attack us, but I knocked one of the guys out with the end of my blade, and Mikasa did the same to the other guy. We both pointed our swords at the guys’ throat and he finally gave in, telling his men to move the cart. I placed the blade back at my side and Mikasa and I shared a look of congratulations and thanks.
A mother walked up to us and thanked us, while the daughter stared at us in awe. Fala licked the girls’ face and she laughed, waving at us as we used our maneuvering devices to leave the area.
A voice rang through out the area, “Evacuation complete, retreat inside Wall Rose!”
I looked on as soldier after soldier fled. A little ways away I could see a large amount of Titans climbing the soldiers’ base where we’re supposed to be able to refill our gas. I scanned the area and saw soldiers stranded everywhere, all unsure of what to do because of their less than sufficient gas amount.
“Let’s go find the others and see what we can do about the gas situation,” I suggest to Mikasa.
She nods in agreement and we take off. We soon found some of our friends, including Armin, who’s sitting in a corner.
“What happened to his squad?” I ask one of the guys standing around us.
“We don’t know, he hasn’t said a thing, but he’s the only one we found,” the guy replies.
Mikasa slowly walks over to Armin and begins whispering to him, trying to get him to tell her what happened to Eren. He finally explained that everyone had been killed. Mikasa then rose to her feet and walked to the edge of the building.
She said cruel things, calling everyone cowards, and then she maneuvered herself away. I shook my head at her tactics. But, though her words were harsh, they were inspiring, and many of us began to follow her. I found myself behind Jean as he lead everyone onwards. Some tried to pass through a crowd of titans and were eaten, as the titans were distracted, Jean yelled for us to march on, and so we did. Some were killed, but most of us made it. Yet, we found ourselves stuck outside of the headquarters, as a group of titans swarmed the building. We took our chances and crashed through the windows of the building.
Fala hopped down from my back and growled at a wall, just as a Titan crashed his face into it, forming a hole. I gasped and stared at it, it’s spine chilling and disgusting features remained there, smiling. Suddenly the Titan’s face was gone, punched by a different Titan. I looked on in confusion as a Titan fought the others. A titan fighting a titan was unheard of.
I snapped out of my confusion, “Come on guys let’s go!” I yelled, leading them farther into the building.
After a while Armin was able to come up with a plan, once Jean and a few others had found storage of guns in the place. Most of us were to be sent down in an elevator, and they’d shoot at the titans that were in the room, blinding them. Some of the more physically adequate soldiers would then kill the confused titans.
I was chosen in place of Connie to be one of the soldiers to kill a titan. We finally put the plan into action, and I stood above the room on a wooden beam, waiting for my signal. The titans came dangerously close, and I began to get worried that they’d waited to long, but just as a titan was about to grab a person, the fires were shot and smoke filled the area as the titans stumbled backwards in surprise. I shot forward and swiftly sliced the creature’s neck, killing it. The smoke cleared and a screech filled the air. I looked around and noticed a single titan hadn’t been killed, Sasha’s. It reached out to grab her, but I flew up and sliced its hand off, releasing Fala who traveled up its arm and sliced its neck.
A chorus of cheers echoed through out the room, and Sasha hugged me in gratitude. I awkwardly pet her head, then pushed her off of me, not liking the contact. Everyone gathered gas tanks and refilled their own. We were finally all set, and ready to leave the premises. As we exited the building, we noticed the other titans had begun to eat the Titan who had been fighting them. The Titan that seemed to be on our side destroyed the rest, and then collapsed. I stared in wonder, then Mikasa randomly jumped downwards, and I as I looked closer, I saw a body within the creature. Eren’s body.
