Cherrykit and her littermates were bouncing with joy.  it was finally time for them to be apprentices.

maplekit and whitekit sat in the corner of the nursery with angry looks on their faces.

"now we will be the only kits in the nursery." maplekit wailed to whitekit. brackenfrond walked up to the younger kits and whispered quickly into their ears.

the kits nodded with excitement and the angry looks disappeared. brackenfrond padded up to bloodkit and started liking her fur until it was smooth.

Cherrykit leaned over to shadowkit, they were the best of friends even though they were littermates. "wanna go exploring", she mewed.

"but what about the ceremony." shadowkit said. "we'll be back in time for the ceremony, it's nothing to worry about." Cherrykit huffed impatiently.

"Ok. Ok. I'm coming." shadowkit meowed and set off at a trot beside his sister. "where are we going?"

"across the thunderpath" Cherrykit decided. a shadow of nervousness crossed shadowkit's eyes but there was no hesitation in his voice as he purred, "ok".

Cherrykit smiled and led the way out of the nursery and headed toward the dirtplace tunnel.

"eww why are we going to the dirtplace tunnel. it's stinky." , shadowkit complained. "because we don't want to be caught by the guard mouse-brain, Cherrykit said and cuffed her brother over the ear with sheathed claws.

shadowkit gave no reply. he followed his sister out of the dirtplace tunnel and walked with his tail high as they walked toward the thunderpath.

"so, why are we exploring exactly?" shadowkit meowed, breaking the silence. "because if we prove we can cross the thunderpath and catch a load of prey, Graystar will give us great mentors so we can boast to other apprentices." Cherrykit explained.

shadowkit nodded his white head. soon the acrid tang of the thunderpath filled the air and the roaring of the monsters zooming across the thunderpath was overwhelming.

"b-be careful when you cross Cherrykit.", shadowkit stammered. " of course I will fish-brain." Cherrykit mewed with certainty in her mew.

tail held high, Cherrykit stalked to the edge of the thunderpath and waited for a gap in between the monsters. as soon as a gap opened up, Cherrykit started dashing across. half way across, Cherrykit's paw got stuck in a sticky twoleg thing.

"watch out Cherrykit!", shadowkit screamed as the screech of tires sounded and Cherrykit shreaked in fear.

shadowkit couldn't tear his eyes off of Cherrykit as a bright red monster came barreling toward her. Cherrykit frantically tried to get her paw unstuck from the sticky thing.

there was a loud thud as the monster zoomed above Cherrykit. when the smoke cleared away shadowkit prayed to StarClan that Cherrykit would still be standing.

but his luck was out because Cherrykit was lying on the road with a small stream of blood trickling out of her mouth.

shadowkit stared at his sister in horror before turning around to get help for his favorite littermate. shadowkit didn't watch where he put his paws and before he knew what was happening a shiny trap was caught around his neck.

shadowkit knew as he was giving way to blackness that there would be no help for him or his sister because no cat knew where they were....
