Chapter 2

I opened my mouth to answer her but shut it just as quickly when we heard the front door open then slam shut. Moments later Elizabeth's brother Ethan walked into the kitchen. "Hey Lizzy, Vivienne." He tousled my hair, then hers. I wish he didn't think of me as a kid sister. I think I've been in love with him since I first met him when I was 10. He was 12. I had just moved here from Las Vegas and Elizabeth and I  immediately became best friends. I remember the first time I spent the night with her. It was only a few weeks after we met and my mom of course was drunk and high and said I'd needed somewhere to be other than home so she had dropped me off at Elizabeth's house. I'm not even sure she had called first, but they let me stay anyway. Elizabeth was the only person I'd ever told about my moms drug abuse and about her drinking problem. She'd pinky promised to never tell anyone unless I said to otherwise (that will probably never happen). Doing so had probably set us up as best friends for life. I've now lived here 5 years and we are still closer than sisters. I am definitely not complaining.

Realizing that I was being talked to I looked up, snapping out of my thought and blinked at Ethan and Elizabeth who were both waiting for an answer to a question I hadn't even heard. "Uh...What was the question?" I asked feeling guilty and like I'd been caught doing something I shouldn't have been.  Ethan looked at me with a frown for a moment before quickly hiding it and plastering back on his smile but it was too late I'd seen it. "What do you think about going to see a movie with me and Elizabeth this weekend?" Ethan repeated. I smiled and nodded in response. "What movie?"  They thought for a minute "How about "The secret life of Walter Mitty?" Elizabeth pipped in. Ethan and I both agreed smiling happily.

"Hey uh do you mind if I stay the night?" I asked Elizabeth a few hours later. "Uh duh. You still have to tell me about what happened today. Just cause you didn't say anything about it doesn't mean I don't know when stuff happens." Nodding quietly I began to tell her about my mom and last night.
