One Week Later

Today's the big day. Eighteen. The day I am an official voter. The day I am finally an adult. The day I get to know everything about the curly headed boy.

I wake up bright and early, the usual time for a school day. I roll myself out of the warm confines of my bed, not ready to begin my day.

I sit on the edge of my bed for a second, still not ready to get up. Plus, I'm hoping that the boy will show up before I go to school and give me some answers. I don't think I can stand to sit at school all day, wondering when he will show up, and wondering what he will tell me.

I'm just about to get up when I hear a knock at my bedroom door. Is it the boy?

"Come in!" I say, my morning voice making me sound more groggy than I usually do.

The door creaks open and there stands my mom and dad, my mom holding a cake with multiple candles (I'm assuming there are eighteen), and my dad holds a box wrapped in sparkly purple paper. I internally groan. Why they have to do this every year, I don't know. I tell them not to. I don't like presents.

"Happy birthday!" They yell out simultaneously. They make their way over to me, holding the cake and present out to me. I grab hold of the cake, and my mom takes out a lighter from her back pocket. I watch warily as she lights every candle, all eighteen of them.

She stands up, and my dad grabs a digital camera out of his jacket pocket. How could this get any worse? A cake, present, and now pictures?

He turns the camera on, lifting it up.

"Blow out your candles, Madelynn!" He encourages me. I hesitate, before taking a deep breath. I blow out all of them, with slight difficulty, because there are so many candles. I don't bother with making a wish, none of them ever come true, anyway.

As soon as I blow out the candles, my mom takes the cake away and sits it on my dresser, the birthday dessert becoming forgotten. My dad thrusts the box towards me, and I hesitantly take it.

Why did they have to get me a gift? I think to myself as I gently tear the pretty paper covering it. I hate it when people spend money on me.

"You know you didn't have to do this," I say quietly as I finish tearing the paper off. My parents don't answer, they just smile as I open the box.

Inside is a plain brown leather book, a rectangular shape. I pick it up, opening it. Inside are numerous pictures of me and Addison, before the accident. Her mom is even in a few of them. I try not to tear up as I flip through numerous pictures, from us on the first day of school to the third grade play. I miss her.

I'm just about to put the trash from the wrapping paper back in the box, but I notice something else is in there. I pick up the necklace, admiring it's beauty. The silver chain was long, and would probably fall almost all the way past my chest. Attached to the end was an old, varnished key, with intricate designs swirled into the metal. An 'S' was scratched into the surface near the hole where the chain ran through. They even personalized it. 'S' as in Sanders.

"I told you guys not to spend money on me!" I complain, still admiring the key necklace. I hear my dad chuckle nervously. "I didn't exactly spend money on that one. I found it in the garden behind the house. It was just laying there while I was walking by. Thought you might like it," he smiled. "It was pretty strange that it was just laying there, though."

I nod in agreement, laying it down on my bed beside me. "Well, I should get ready for school now," I awkwardly say, trying to shoo them off. I just want the attention to be taken off me.

Thankfully, they leave, taking my cake with them. They tell me to be sure and eat a piece before I leave for school. I tell them I will, and head into the bathroom for my shower.

As I undress, I look at the scars I have inflicted upon myself in the past, scattered over my arms, thighs, and hips. I haven't cut in about two years, but the scars still remain noticeable.

I hop in the shower, taking time to cleanse my body before hopping out and drying off. I pad back into my room, nearly jumping out of my skin as I find the boy, standing in front of my closet.

"W-What are you doing in here?" I inquire, tightening the towel around my body. He smiles, not moving. "I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday," cute dimples pop into his cheeks as his smile grows.

I furrow my brows. "Thanks." I walk past him and into my closet, grabbing my normal outfit of black jeans and a black hoodie before walking back into my room.

"Please don't wear black today," the boy whispers. "It's your birthday, wear something...happier," he suggests. I laugh before throwing the outfit I picked out onto my bed. I cross my arms, waiting for him to leave.

"What?" He asks me, laughing. "Get out of my room so I can change," I whisper, becoming a little insecure. He shakes his head, laughing even harder before taking a seat on my bed. "Trust me, it's nothing I haven't seen before," he smiles reassuringly. I groan. "Would it be so hard to just disappear like you always do?"

He grins. "But today, I can't just disappear. I'm here to give you answers, remember?" I shake my head, just turning my back to him and drop my towel. As I put on my undergarments, I feel him walk up behind me, and lightly touch the skin of my hips.

His hands are as cold as ice, yet they are on fire as they grip my hips. Electricity courses through my veins.

"I remember watching you cut all over your hips that night. You were only 13," he sounds pained as he says this. "I wanted to stop you so badly."

I remembered that night, too. That was when the boy didn't visit me much.

I shake his grip off me, and walk to my bed and begin to get dressed. I braid my hair to the side, and slip my shoes on.

"Why aren't you going to wear the necklace?" Harry asks me as I begin to walk out the door. "I didn't set it out there for a reason," he smirks.

"Wait," I comment. "You put the necklace out there? It's yours?" He laughs.

"Yes. It has my initial on it," he responds. "An 'S'."

This causes some curiosity. "What is your name?" I inquire.

"Styles," he says quietly, walking over to the bed to pick up the necklace. I stay silent as he gradually walks toward me, and secures the pretty necklace around my neck. "Harry Styles."

He steps back. "Looks just as good on you as I thought it would," he smiles. "Now, go eat some cake. It's your birthday."

"But I want some ans-" I begin, but he cuts me off my vanishing into thin air.
