Epilogue
Juan had to see his girl friend, Jan. He had to. He missed her like crazy.
At first, he thought he had merely been attracted to her, typical lust. She was cute, Juan was male. It couldn't have been helped. He thought back on what an idiot he had been when he had first tried to impress her. Okay, maybe she was more than just cute.
Juan's thoughts were interrupted as someone came into the restaurant. He glanced up from the menu to see a blonde girl walk in. She was nice looking with pretty blue eyes, but she wasn't Jan. Jan's eyes were hazel. Juan went back to studying the menu.
He hoped Jan would get there soon. She was already twenty minutes late. The two had been hanging out a lot lately, but he hadn't seen her in a while. He missed the way she smiled, the way she rolled her eyes, and the way she challenged everything around her. He was pretty sure that what he felt now was more than lust. Maybe not quite love, but something similar.
When Juan had first laid eyes on Jan almost nine months ago, he had presumed she was a snob by the way she dressed and how she carried herself, generally with her arms crossed and her pointy nose in the air. But once he had looked closer, he saw insecurity in the way she forced a smile, the stiffness in the way she moved, and the uncertainty in her eyes. Her weaknesses had been intriguing for a while. But when Jan had started to change, slowly at first and then more quickly as the months went by, Juan's interest had grown. Jan started giving real smiles, her jokes became less sarcastic, her barriers started to come down. She sat up straighter. When he massaged her in class, he discovered that her knots had disappeared like magic.
Then she began to confide in him, and he became more impressed by her resilience through some genuinely hard times. Yet her confessions were infrequent. In general, she rarely called and turned him down most of the times he tried to see her, but usually it was because she was busy and not because she didn't want to see him. As time went by, her indifferent behavior drove him nuts. Jan was a mystery and Juan didn't have a clue how to solve it.
A couple entered the restaurant. Neither one of them was Jan, but Juan watched them for a moment. They seemed happy. He noticed how the man's eyes shone when he looked at his partner and how she leaned into him as they walked side by side.
Juan envied the man with the beautiful date. Jan was more beautiful by far than the woman being seated, especially since she had started wearing more feminine clothes. Three days ago, when Jan had returned his call, he had jumped at the chance to invite her to dinner. He had something important to tell her.
He couldn't wait much longer. His fingers tapped the table in irritation. He checked the door, even though he hadn't heard anyone come in.
Juan checked his watch. It was 7:27 PM. He wondered if he should call her. He wished she had let him pick her up. If it had been a date, he would have insisted. But he was painfully aware that it wasn't a date. Maybe someday, he could change her mind about that. Maybe someday the two of them would be the happy couple that everyone in the room envied.
Or maybe not.
He heard the door open again, and there was Jan. She looked amazing in a sparkly pink dress that hugged her in all the right places. Juan saw her scan the room for him and stood up to get her attention. She smiled when she spotted him, a slow, lazy smile of recognition. Juan's heart jumped into his throat. He watched her walk toward him as if in slow motion. No one would believe it if he told them that six months ago, the self-assured woman in the pink dress had been struggling to find her way. Now, she seemed to know exactly where she was going. Juan just hoped she would let him tag along.
"Hi, Juan," Jan said gently.
Juan responded, "Good evening. You look beautiful."
Jan blushed. He loved how she could still appear so childlike after all the growing up she had done.
He moved around the table to get her chair for her. As he helped her be seated, he took a deep inhalation and breathed her in. Juan felt his shoulders relax. All the tension flowed out with his exhale, leaving him feeling a little light-headed. Or maybe it was simply Jan that affected him that way.
Juan sat back down across the table from his pretty companion. "So," Jan began. "You said earlier on the phone that you had something to tell me."
His eyes sparkled at the opening. There were a lot of things he wished to tell her. But he had pinky sworn to act only as a friend, and he had been doing fairly well at appearing to stay within that boundary.
For tonight at least, he would keep his promise. "I have a business proposition involving my grandma, a spa, and hopefully you," he said, and watched her eyebrows rise. Whatever she had been expecting him to say, it wasn't anything like that.
This is going to be fun, he thought, and began to explain.

Prologue
Jan Weston untangled herself from Brian's sheets carefully, hoping not to wake her fun buddy. Geesh, did he steal these from the hospital? she thought as she inched her way out from under the crisp white covers. Brian's snores were loud enough to wake a comatose patient, something that would have driven her crazy were she dating him. Since the two were "just friends with benefits" she appreciated the snores as they assured her that he wouldn't witness her stride of pride out of his bedroom.
I am such a badass, she thought as she gathered her clothes. She hooked the clasp on her pink lace bra and then pulled on the matching thong before wiggling into a form-fitting little pink dress. She carefully zipped it up. Brian continued to snore, though she wondered how as he was lying on his stomach, his head not even on a pillow. If we were dating, I'd be smothering him with a pillow right about now.
She glanced around for her purse and shoes. She found the clutch and then padded barefoot around the room searching for her strappy sandals. Finally locating them under the displaced comforter, she stood on her right leg as she put the left shoe on. Jan continued her internal monologue: Two years ago, I'd be clinging to a guy as if my life depended upon his unwavering commitment, and now here I am sneaking out after fulfilling my sexscription.
She tightened her core as she worked to secure the buckle on the sandal. She couldn't sit down on the bed without risking waking Brian, and there was nowhere else in the spartan room to sit. Putting her left foot down, she gingerly lifted her right foot, making sure she had her balance before lifting it higher. Balancing on one foot wearing a low heel while slipping the other shoe on... if only Shauna could see me now. She was fairly certain that her personal trainer would high five her. The thought of Shauna magically appearing and high fiving her made Jan giggle. Her right hand immediately flew to her mouth to cover the sound, the left attempting to fling outwards in an attempt to catch her balance. Instead, it caught on the heel and jerked her body just enough to cause her to tumble to the floor.
"Jan?" she heard a groggy voice say.
Dammit! She shoved the sandal the rest of the way on and scrambled out the door before Dr. Sexy could get his stethoscope. As she hurried to the door, her cheeks hot from embarrassment and her unbuckled shoe almost coming off, she thought, Thank God I'm leaving the continent.
